Chapter 19 - The Letter She Stole
Natalia placed the envelope on the table between them.
The paper was yellowed.
The corners were bent.
Katelyn recognized her own handwriting immediately.
Damian,
I don’t know whether you will ever forgive me for leaving. I don’t know whether I forgive you for sending me away. But I need you to know there was a baby.
Katelyn stopped reading.
Her hands trembled.
“You had this?”
Natalia nodded.
“For three years.”
“Why?”
“Because if he knew, he would never stop looking for you.”
Katelyn stared at her.
“You knew I lost the baby.”
“Yes.”
“And you still stayed beside him while he believed I stole from him.”
“Yes.”
The honesty was brutal.
Natalia looked older without the fur coat, jewelry, or perfect makeup.
“I thought if enough time passed, he would love me.”
Katelyn’s voice stayed cold.
“So you let me grieve alone.”
“I did worse than that.”
Natalia admitted she had sent Katelyn anonymous messages after the miscarriage.
Messages implying Damian was relieved she was gone.
Messages claiming he was engaged.
At the time, none of it had been true.
Natalia had created the distance she later stepped into.
Katelyn felt anger rise so sharply she had to grip the chair.
“Why give me the letter now?”
“Because Grace survived.”
“That does not erase anything.”
“I know.”
“Because Damian rejected you?”
“Yes.”
Katelyn appreciated that she did not pretend otherwise.
Natalia lowered her gaze.
“I wanted what you had. Then I realized I never had it.”
“What did I have?”
“He trusted your heart, even when he failed to trust your actions.”
Katelyn almost laughed.
“That failure cost us everything.”
“Yes.”
Natalia pushed the envelope toward her.
“I will testify. I will accept whatever sentence comes.”
Katelyn looked at the letter.
Forgiveness did not arrive.
It might never arrive.
But clarity did.
Natalia was not the mastermind.
She was a willing participant.
A jealous woman who repeatedly chose cruelty.
Katelyn would not protect her from consequences.
But she would not spend the rest of her life chained to hatred either.
At trial, Katelyn testified.
So did Damian.
So did Natalia.
Arthur Crane received a lengthy prison sentence.
Several council members accepted plea agreements.
Samuel lost his professional licenses and served time for conspiracy, though his cooperation reduced the sentence.
Natalia was convicted of fraud, unlawful medical access, and obstruction.
She received prison time followed by supervised release.
Before she was taken away, she looked at Katelyn.
“I’m sorry.”
Katelyn answered quietly.
“I believe you.”
Natalia’s eyes filled.
“But I still won’t save you from what you did.”
Natalia nodded.
“That’s fair.”
Grace remained in the NICU for five weeks.
The day she was finally ready to go home, Damian arrived carrying no bodyguards and no legal documents.
