Chapter 8 - The Child They Never Spoke About

Damian looked at Katelyn.
Her face had gone white.
“Katie?”
She could not answer.
The boutique disappeared around her.
The white crib.
The shelves.
The bodyguards.
All of it blurred beneath the memory she had spent three years trying not to touch.
She had not only been pregnant when she left San Francisco.
She had lost that baby eight weeks later.
Alone.
In a hospital outside Seattle.
Damian had never known.
Katelyn pressed one hand against her mouth.
The baby she carried now moved beneath her other palm.
Damian saw the truth in her face.
“You were pregnant.”
She closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
His voice broke.
“Mine?”
“Yes.”
Natalia stepped backward.
Even she seemed shaken.
Damian’s control collapsed for one second.
He turned away, both hands braced against the edge of the display table.
His shoulders locked.
His breathing became rough.
Katelyn had imagined this moment many times.
She thought she would feel relief.
Instead, she felt the old grief return with full force.
“You should have told me,” Damian said.
“I tried.”
He looked back.
“I never received anything.”
“I mailed you a letter from the hospital.”
Samuel lowered his head.
Damian noticed.
“You intercepted it.”
Samuel did not deny it.
Damian moved toward him.
Marcus stepped between them.
“Sir.”
Damian stopped inches away.
His hands remained at his sides.
But rage transformed his face.
“You let me believe she left because she hated me.”
Samuel’s voice was quiet.
“Your father ordered every communication destroyed.”
“And the hospital?”
“I was told the pregnancy ended.”
Damian turned toward Katelyn.
His eyes were wet now.
Not crying.
But close.
“Did you go through it alone?”
“Yes.”
The word nearly destroyed him.
Vincent’s recording continued.
“The first pregnancy was unfortunate, but necessary. Damian was not ready to choose between love and duty.”
Katelyn’s jaw tightened.
The dead man spoke about her lost child like a failed transaction.
Damian’s face became stone.
Vincent continued.
“If Katelyn ever becomes pregnant again, the council must act before legal recognition occurs.”
The screen went black for several seconds.
Then another image appeared.
A scanned page from the Founders Trust.
At the bottom was a handwritten amendment.
Damian read it aloud.
“Any child conceived by Damian Blackwood and Katelyn Hayes shall inherit controlling authority.”
Natalia stared at Katelyn.
“Why her specifically?”
Samuel answered.
“Because Katelyn’s mother was a Blackwood.”
Katelyn froze.
Her mother had never spoken of the family.
She had died when Katelyn was seventeen.
Damian looked from the document to Katelyn.
Their relationship had not been random.
Their child did not unite two strangers.
