Chapter 16 - The Man Outside the Operating Room

Hospital security found Arthur near a service elevator.
He carried no weapon.
Only a leather folder and a forged judicial order granting the council emergency guardianship.
Marcus stopped him before he reached maternity.
Arthur remained calm.
“You cannot prevent lawful authority.”
Marcus took the order.
“The judge listed here retired two years ago.”
Arthur’s face changed.
Only slightly.
Enough.
Security detained him until police arrived.
Inside the operating room, Katelyn heard none of it.
The baby’s heart rate continued to fall.
The doctor recommended an emergency cesarean delivery.
Katelyn signed the consent.
Her hand shook.
Damian stood beside her head after the medical team allowed him inside.
He wore scrubs.
No suit.
No watch.
No symbol of power.
Only fear.
“Katie.”
She looked at him.
“If something happens to me—”
“No.”
“Listen.”
His jaw tightened.
She continued.
“The baby stays with my sister, Rachel.”
Damian closed his eyes.
Not him.
He understood why.
“I’ll honor it.”
“No council access.”
“Never.”
“No family trust until my child is old enough to choose.”
“I’ll sign anything.”
Katelyn stared at him.
“And if the baby is yours?”
His voice broke.
“Then I spend the rest of my life earning the right to be called the father.”
The anesthesia began.
Lights blurred above her.
The last thing she felt was Damian’s hand around hers.
Then came voices.
Pressure.
Movement.
A silence that lasted one second too long.
Damian stopped breathing.
Then a small cry cut through the room.
Sharp.
Alive.
The doctor lifted a tiny baby girl.
Katelyn began crying immediately.
Damian covered his mouth.
The nurse carried the baby to the warmer.
Premature.
Small.
But breathing.
“Can she see her?” Damian asked.
The nurse brought the baby near Katelyn’s face.
Katelyn kissed her daughter’s forehead.
“Hi, Grace.”
Damian closed his eyes at the name.
Grace.
Something none of them deserved.
Something the child gave them anyway.
The baby was taken to neonatal care for breathing support.
Katelyn remained stable.
Damian followed neither the doctor nor the baby until Katelyn told him to go.
“Stay with her,” she whispered.
He nodded.
At the NICU window, Damian placed one hand against the glass.
The nurse approached with a sealed identification kit.
“Ms. Hayes requested a legal paternity test after delivery.”
Damian looked at the tiny child.
He did not hesitate.
“Take whatever sample you need.”
But before the test was completed, Marcus arrived carrying Arthur’s leather folder.
Inside was an older DNA report.
May you like
One that had been created before Grace’s birth.
👉 Arthur already possessed Damian’s genetic result—and it proved he had known the baby’s father all along.
