Chapter 9 - Her Mother’s Real Name

Samuel opened a second file.
A photograph appeared.
Two young women stood beside Vincent Blackwood outside a mansion in Napa Valley.
One was Damian’s late aunt.
The other was Katelyn’s mother.
Her name beneath the photograph was not Elaine Hayes.
It was Eleanor Blackwood.
Katelyn stared at the screen.
“My mother hated wealthy families.”
“She hated this one,” Samuel said.
“Why?”
“Because Vincent stole her inheritance.”
Damian looked at him.
“How?”
“Eleanor was the eldest child. Under the original trust, she should have inherited controlling authority.”
“But my father controlled it.”
“Because he convinced the family she was mentally unstable.”
Katelyn felt sick.
The pattern was the same.
Discredit the woman.
Erase her rights.
Control the trust.
Samuel continued.
“Eleanor escaped before they could place her under guardianship. She changed her name and raised Katelyn away from the family.”
Damian’s eyes moved to the trust amendment.
“Then why name our child?”
“Eleanor filed a sealed challenge before her death. The settlement restored succession rights to her descendants.”
Katelyn stared at the screen.
“My mother knew?”
“She knew enough to protect you.”
“Then why didn’t she tell me?”
“Because Vincent was still watching.”
The boutique suddenly felt even colder.
Her mother had spent her life hiding.
Katelyn had thought it was shame.
It had been survival.
Natalia shook her head.
“This is absurd. Damian and Katelyn are related?”
Samuel answered quickly.
“Distant branches. No close biological relation. The trust language is about uniting succession claims, not family proximity.”
Katelyn barely heard him.
She remembered her mother locking documents inside a small cedar box.
She remembered being told never to open it unless someone named Blackwood came looking.
After her mother died, the box disappeared.
“Vincent took it,” she whispered.
Samuel nodded.
“I found it after his death.”
Damian’s voice sharpened.
“Where is it?”
“In the council archive.”
Marcus received a message through his earpiece.
“The sedan entered the underground garage beneath Blackwood Tower.”
Damian looked toward Samuel.
“The council is meeting.”
“Yes.”
“Because of Katelyn?”
“Because of the child.”
Katelyn tightened her coat around her belly.
“I am not going near that building.”
Damian nodded.
“You won’t.”
That answer surprised her.
He looked at Marcus.
“Take her somewhere secure.”
Katelyn shook her head.
“No.”
Damian’s voice softened.
“Katie—”
“I’m done being moved while men make decisions about my life.”
She looked at the screen.
“At my mother’s life.”
Then at Natalia.
“At my child.”
Katelyn stood straighter.
“If the council wants to discuss my baby, they can do it in front of me.”
Damian stared at her.
For the first time since entering the boutique, something like pride appeared in his eyes.
But Samuel’s next words erased it.
“The council already has the cedar box.”
Katelyn looked at him.
May you like
“And inside it is a document that can either give you everything—or declare your child legally nonexistent.”
👉 Katelyn chose to face the council, unaware that Natalia had secretly sent them a message warning that she was coming.
