Chapter 11 - The Nurse Who Looked Away

The nurse’s name was Colleen Marsh.

She had cared for Florence during the final two months.

When detectives questioned her, she initially denied noticing anything unusual.

Then they showed her the hallway footage.

Colleen began to cry.

Margaret had approached her three weeks before Florence’s hospitalization.

She claimed Florence was refusing medication and becoming mentally unstable.

She offered Colleen cash to sign complete dosage logs even when Florence did not take every pill.

Colleen accepted.

She told herself the records were only paperwork.

She told herself Florence’s illness was terminal anyway.

But after Margaret switched the bottle, Colleen continued recording doses that had never been given.

That allowed the missing medicine to remain hidden.

Colleen was charged with falsifying medical records and neglect.

The laboratory report arrived days later.

The replacement tablets were harmless supplements.

Margaret had not introduced poison.

But the absence of Florence’s prescribed medication had directly accelerated her heart failure.

Prosecutors prepared charges including involuntary manslaughter, evidence tampering and attempted financial exploitation of an elderly person.

The scandal spread through suburban Ohio.

The relatives who had slapped Ethan with their eyes at the funeral now avoided reporters.

Some apologized.

Most did not.

Ethan did not care.

He kept reading Florence’s diary.

Its pages contained anger, humor and painful honesty.

She wrote about his early dishonesty.

She wrote about the tenderness with which he washed her hair when she became weak.

She wrote about Margaret’s resentment.

She wrote about her own fear of being loved for money.

One entry stopped him.

Ethan thinks refusing my wealth proves he loves me. He is wrong. Love is not measured by what we refuse. It is measured by what we do when no reward remains.

Ethan closed the diary.

Florence had known the will would leave him nothing obvious.

She wanted to see what he did afterward.

Whether he sold their story.

Whether he attacked her family.

Whether he disappeared after the debt was cleared.

Mr. Hale called that afternoon.

“There is one more instruction.”

“What is it?”

“The scholarship foundation requires an interim director.”

Ethan almost laughed.

“You’re not suggesting me.”

“Florence did.”

“I have no experience.”

“She knew.”

“Her family will fight it.”

“They already have.”

“Then why would she choose me?”

Mr. Hale paused.

“Because the appointment comes with no inheritance, limited salary and complete financial oversight.”

Florence had created one final test.

Not of whether Ethan could receive wealth.

Of whether he could be trusted near it.

👉 Florence offered Ethan responsibility over millions—without allowing him to own a single dollar.
