Chapter 5 - The Recording From Room 317

The cassette recorder was old but carefully maintained.
A strip of white tape had been placed across the top.
The writing was turned away from the relatives.
Ethan did not need to see it.
He recognized the device.
Florence had kept it on the windowsill in Room 317 because she enjoyed recording letters for friends whose eyesight had failed.
Mr. Hale removed the recorder from the box.
“There is one cassette inside.”
Margaret reached for it.
The lawyer pulled it back.
“Florence’s instructions are explicit.”
“What instructions?”
“Ethan decides whether it is played publicly.”
Every relative looked at him.
Margaret’s lips tightened.
“If he refuses, we know what’s on it.”
Ethan stared at the recorder.
He remembered a night two weeks before the wedding.
Florence had been sitting by the window.
He had believed she was asleep.
His phone rang.
It was a debt collector.
Ethan stepped into the bathroom but did not close the door fully.
He whispered that he would soon have access to enough money to settle everything.
He never said Florence’s name.
He did not have to.
After the call, Florence opened her eyes.
“Were you planning to tell me?”
He had lied.
“Tell you what?”
She stared at him for a long time.
Then she said, “Open the second layer, Ethan. There is always another truth beneath the first one.”
At the time, he thought she was speaking about fear.
Now he understood.
The recorder had been running.
Margaret looked around at the relatives.
“Play it.”
Ethan’s thumb rested near the button.
He knew the recording might destroy him.
He also knew refusing would confirm everything they already believed.
He pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then Ethan’s younger voice emerged from the speaker.
“I don’t need to love her forever. I only need to keep her happy long enough.”
A relative gasped.
Margaret closed her eyes in satisfaction.
Ethan’s legs nearly gave way.
The recording continued.
Another male voice replied.
“How long is long enough?”
Ethan answered.
“Until the debt is gone.”
Margaret looked directly at him.
“There he is.”
But the tape had not ended.
Footsteps sounded on the recording.
Then Florence’s voice entered.
Calm.
Clear.
Awake.
“I think you should come out of the bathroom, Ethan.”
The younger Ethan began apologizing.
Florence interrupted him.
“Sit down and tell me the whole truth.”
What followed was not the conversation Ethan remembered.
May you like
It was the confession he had forced himself to forget.
👉 The recording continued beyond Ethan’s cruelest words—and revealed what Florence made him do afterward.
