Chapter 9 - The Safe-Deposit Box

Mr. Hale contacted the local police.

No one was formally accused.

But the shoebox, recording and Florence’s letter were documented before anyone left the room.

Ethan was escorted to the bank with Mr. Hale and Detective Rebecca Sloan.

Margaret followed with her attorney.

The relatives remained at the funeral home, their earlier smugness replaced by uneasy silence.

The brass key opened Box 317.

Inside was a slim black case.

A diary.

Three sealed medication bags.

A flash drive.

And another envelope addressed to Ethan.

Detective Sloan photographed everything before allowing him to touch the letter.

Florence’s handwriting was weaker than before.

Ethan, I chose you because you were imperfect enough to understand me. But I feared that your first lie would make everyone blame you if something happened.

His vision blurred.

Margaret has asked me to change the foundation documents six times. She believes the family money belongs to her. She has also told people you control me. I do not know whether she is merely angry or dangerous.

Margaret’s attorney interrupted.

“This is speculation from an ill woman.”

Detective Sloan ignored him.

Florence’s letter continued:

I placed a camera outside my bedroom after medication disappeared. I have not watched the footage. I did not want fear to decide whom I loved.

Ethan looked at the flash drive.

Florence had died without watching it.

She had chosen uncertainty over immediate accusation.

That was both compassionate and terrifying.

Detective Sloan inserted the drive into an evidence laptop.

The first clips showed nurses arriving.

Ethan carrying food.

Florence resting.

Margaret visiting.

Nothing unusual.

Then a recording from five nights before Florence’s final hospitalization appeared.

Margaret entered the bedroom alone.

She opened the medication drawer.

Removed one bottle.

And placed several tablets into her handbag.

Ethan’s breath stopped.

Margaret’s attorney stood.

“We need to end this interview.”

But the video continued.

Margaret returned ten minutes later with a different bottle.

She placed it in the drawer.

Then she looked directly toward the hidden camera.

Not at it.

Past it.

She had not seen the lens.

But her expression revealed calculation.

Detective Sloan paused the video.

Margaret whispered, “I was protecting her.”

“From what?” Ethan asked.

Margaret did not answer.

The detective opened one of the sealed medication bags.

Laboratory testing would be required.

But the label on the bottle did not match the tablets inside.

👉 The footage showed Margaret switching Florence’s medication—but not yet why she did it.
