Chapter 12 - The Choice Without Reward
Ethan met the foundation board in a plain conference room.
No flowers.
No portraits.
No relatives whispering behind him.
The board chair, Dr. Naomi Keller, placed the terms in front of him.
One-year appointment.
Moderate salary.
Every expense audited.
No authority to direct grants to family or friends.
No access to principal funds.
Mandatory disclosure of his past debt and recorded confession.
“You may refuse,” Dr. Keller said.
Ethan looked at the contract.
“What did Florence expect me to do?”
“She said you would want to accept for the wrong reason.”
He gave a tired smile.
“That sounds like her.”
“She also said you might stay for the right one.”
Ethan thought about his brother.
Noah’s debts would be cleared whether Ethan accepted or not.
There was no financial rescue hidden in the position.
Only work.
Scrutiny.
Humiliation.
And the chance to complete something Florence believed mattered.
He signed.
The news was ugly at first.
Headlines called him the young widower running his dead wife’s fortune.
Donors threatened to withdraw.
Margaret’s attorney claimed the appointment proved Ethan had manipulated Florence.
Then Mr. Hale released the prenuptial agreement, the recording and Florence’s written instructions with Ethan’s permission.
The public learned that Ethan had entered the relationship with financial motives.
They also learned that he confessed before the wedding, refused immediate payment and signed away inheritance rights.
Some people still hated him.
Others were unsettled by the complexity.
Ethan did not try to appear innocent.
At his first public meeting, he said:
“I began my relationship with Florence while hiding a motive that should have been disclosed. Loving her later does not erase what I did first. I am not asking anyone to forget that.”
A reporter asked why he accepted the foundation role.
“Because she believed people should be judged by what they build after the truth is known.”
The answer did not make him heroic.
But it made him honest.
For the first time, that was enough.
Then the board discovered Margaret had diverted foundation funds years before Florence met Ethan.
