Chapter 4 - What Florence Had Tested

The room became so quiet that Ethan could hear the ceiling vents.

Margaret looked from Mr. Hale to the wedding portrait.

“You’re lying.”

“I represented Florence for twenty-six years,” Mr. Hale said. “I have no reason to lie.”

“You knew he was investigating her money?”

“I knew Florence was investigating him.”

Ethan stared at the lawyer.

Mr. Hale opened the legal folder and removed several pages.

He did not show the writing.

“Florence hired a private investigator six weeks after meeting Ethan.”

Ethan’s stomach dropped.

“She knew about your debt,” Mr. Hale continued. “She knew about the searches. She knew you had spoken to a bankruptcy attorney.”

Margaret laughed sharply.

“And she still married him?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Mr. Hale looked at Ethan.

“That answer may be inside the box.”

Ethan remembered small moments that had seemed unimportant.

Florence asking whether he would still visit if she lost the house.

Florence leaving a bank statement on the table, then watching whether he touched it.

Florence pretending to forget the code to her safe.

He had believed those moments were signs of age.

They had been tests.

“What else did she know?” Ethan asked.

“That you turned down an offer from a tabloid reporter who wanted photographs of her medical documents.”

Ethan blinked.

Margaret’s head snapped toward him.

“You were offered money?”

“Twenty thousand dollars,” Mr. Hale said. “Ethan refused.”

Margaret looked unsettled but recovered quickly.

“One decent decision doesn’t erase his motive.”

“No,” Mr. Hale agreed. “It does not.”

That answer hurt Ethan more than a defense would have.

Florence had not asked the lawyer to make him look innocent.

She had asked him to reveal the truth.

All of it.

Mr. Hale tapped the letter.

“Florence believed Ethan entered the relationship for mixed reasons.”

Margaret scoffed.

“Mixed?”

“She believed he needed financial security. She also believed he developed genuine affection for her.”

“Affection isn’t love.”

Mr. Hale turned to Ethan.

“She wanted you to decide whether it became love.”

Ethan looked down at the brass key.

A small number had been engraved along one side.

He knew that number.

Room 317 had been Florence’s room at the retirement community when they met.

But there was no lock in that room that matched this key.

Mr. Hale moved the shoebox closer.

“The key does not open anything in Florence’s house.”

“Then what does it open?”

“The second layer will tell you.”

Ethan placed both hands inside the box.

His fingers found a narrow cloth tab beneath the cardboard lining.

Margaret stepped closer despite herself.

He pulled.

The false bottom lifted.

And beneath it lay a black metal cassette recorder.

👉 Florence had preserved a conversation Ethan believed no one else had heard.
