Chapter 6 - The Confession He Buried

On the recording, Ethan’s breathing was ragged.

“I’m in debt.”

“How much?” Florence asked.

“One hundred and eighty-seven thousand.”

Several relatives whispered.

Margaret looked startled.

She had known Ethan was desperate.

She had not known the amount.

The recorded Ethan continued.

“My father’s treatment wasn’t covered. Then I borrowed for my brother’s tuition. Then I made bad investments trying to fix it.”

“And when you met me?”

“I saw a way out.”

The present-day Ethan shut his eyes.

He could feel the relatives’ disgust.

Florence’s recorded voice remained steady.

“Did you plan to kill me?”

“No!”

“Did you plan to harm me?”

“Never.”

“Did you plan to marry me and wait?”

Silence.

Then Ethan whispered, “At first.”

Margaret exhaled in triumph.

But Florence asked another question.

“What changed?”

The tape remained silent for several seconds.

Then Ethan began to cry.

“You remembered my father’s birthday.”

Florence gave a soft laugh.

“That changed everything?”

“No. You made me feel like I wasn’t a failure. You didn’t look at me like I was broken.”

“And now?”

“I don’t know what I feel. I’m ashamed.”

Florence’s voice softened.

“Shame can be useful if it leads somewhere.”

“What are you going to do?”

“I’m going to give you a choice.”

The recording clicked off.

The room returned to silence.

Margaret stared at the recorder.

“That proves he used her.”

“Yes,” Mr. Hale said.

Ethan looked at him.

“What was the choice?”

“You know.”

Ethan remembered.

Florence had placed two documents on the table that night.

One was a check large enough to clear every debt.

The other was a prenuptial agreement guaranteeing that Ethan would inherit nothing.

She told him he could take the check and leave forever.

Or he could sign the agreement and marry her without financial protection.

Ethan signed the agreement.

He did not take the check.

Margaret looked at him as though she did not believe it.

“You signed away everything?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Ethan looked at Florence’s portrait.

“Because she deserved to know I could stay without being paid.”

Mr. Hale returned the recorder to the box.

“Florence kept the check.”

“Did she tear it up?” Ethan asked.

“No.”

Mr. Hale placed another sealed envelope on the table.

“She changed the name on it.”
