Chapter 11 - The File on Alice
Aiden had created a private file titled “Maternal Concerns.”
It contained photographs of Alice sleeping during her difficult first trimester.
Messages where she said she felt exhausted.
A doctor’s note recommending reduced activity.
A video of her crying after her father’s memorial anniversary.
Normal moments had been rearranged to suggest instability.
Aiden had sent the file to a custody consultant and described Alice as emotionally unpredictable.
Daniel placed the pages across his conference table.
“He documented you for months.”
Alice looked at a photograph of herself asleep on the sofa, one hand resting on her pregnant stomach.
She remembered that day.
Aiden had brought her tea.
Then he had secretly photographed her.
“I thought he was taking care of me.”
“He was manufacturing evidence.”
Alice turned away so Daniel would not see her cry.
Joyce reached across the table and took her hand.
“Your father warned me about him once.”
Alice looked up.
“When?”
“After Aiden asked to borrow more money. Your father said Aiden loved winning more than he loved people.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“You were happy. And your father hoped he was wrong.”
Daniel gathered the documents.
“Aiden’s file can hurt him if we show the court how deliberately it was created.”
Alice wiped her eyes.
“No courtroom surprises. I want him to know before we enter that I’m not signing.”
Daniel studied her.
“That may make him destroy evidence.”
