Chapter 6 - The Message He Couldn’t Explain

Aiden placed his suit jacket over a dining chair and went upstairs to shower.
The black phone remained in the inside pocket.
Alice heard one soft vibration.
Then another.
She did not touch it.
A preview appeared on the screen.
MADELINE: Once she signs, how quickly can you move the last account?
Alice photographed the message with her own phone.
A second preview appeared.
MADELINE: I’m tired of pretending that house and baby matter to you.
Alice’s stomach tightened.
Not because Madeline insulted her.
Because Aiden had allowed her to believe it.
Footsteps sounded on the stairs.
Alice placed the jacket exactly as she had found it and moved toward the kitchen.
Aiden entered wearing a white shirt, still fastening his cuff.
“Have you seen my jacket?”
“On the chair.”
He checked the phone immediately.
Then he looked at Alice.
She kept slicing strawberries.
“Everything okay?” she asked.
“Work.”
The baby kicked.
Alice flinched and gripped the counter.
Aiden did not notice.
He was already typing a reply.
Later, Alice sent the photographs to Daniel.
The messages suggested conspiracy but did not prove ownership or control.
“We need the account reference,” Daniel said.
Alice looked at the settlement papers lying on the nightstand.
Aiden had included a demand that she vacate the home thirty days after giving birth.
He was no longer hiding his cruelty.
