Chapter 20 - The Ring and the New Beginning

Alice met Aiden in a quiet courthouse conference room one year after the morning Madeline mocked her on the steps.
He looked older.
The expensive confidence was gone.
He placed their finalized divorce papers on the table.
Alice read every page.
Then she signed her name slowly and clearly.
Aiden watched her hand.
“You never used to read anything.”
“I trusted you.”
He looked down.
For the first time, he did not answer with an excuse.
Alice opened a small envelope and removed the wedding ring she had dropped into his palm outside the courthouse.
Daniel had preserved it with the other evidence that day.
She placed it on the table between them.
“I don’t want this back.”
Aiden touched the ring but did not pick it up.
“Was any of it real to you?”
Alice considered the question.
“My love was real. My marriage was real. My investment was real. Your betrayal doesn’t erase what I gave honestly.”
She stood.
“And it doesn’t give you the right to keep taking from me.”
Outside, Joyce waited with Alice’s son.
The baby reached toward her the moment she appeared.
Alice lifted him and kissed his forehead.
The courthouse columns no longer looked frightening.
They looked like the place where she had walked in wounded, pregnant, and underestimated—and walked out with her name, her future, and her power restored.
She had not needed to match Aiden’s ambition.
She had needed to remember her own worth.

As Alice descended the steps into the bright Ohio morning, she never looked back.
**Would you have revealed the envelope on the courthouse steps—or let Aiden believe he had won until the evidence was officially filed?**
