The beneficiary was Madeline Fisher.
Alice stared at the name until the letters blurred.
Madeline was not merely Aiden’s affair partner.
She was holding the assets he planned to reclaim after the divorce.
Her trust owned the office tower, two apartment complexes, and the commercial development Aiden had spent years building.
Daniel folded his hands.
“This arrangement lets him claim he no longer owns the profitable properties.”
“Then after the divorce?”
“Madeline can transfer them back, marry him, or keep them under her name while he controls them privately.”
Alice thought of every dinner where Madeline had sat across from her pretending to be Aiden’s ambitious colleague.
Every baby shower message.
Every false compliment.
“She told me my pregnancy was glowing.”
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“People capable of this usually depend on the other spouse reacting emotionally. They want you angry, frightened, and desperate enough to sign quickly.”
Alice looked at the proposed settlement again.
A yellow tab marked the signature line.
Aiden had scheduled the courthouse hearing for the earliest available date.
He wanted everything completed before the baby arrived.
“What do we need?” she asked.
“Evidence connecting Aiden to Madeline’s trust.”
“He’ll have hidden it.”
“Then we look for something he believes is harmless.”
Alice remembered Aiden’s second phone.
