Chapter 8 - The Obedient Wife Returns
For the next two weeks, Alice stopped questioning Aiden.
She signed routine school-insurance forms in front of him.
She thanked him for arranging the divorce quickly.
She even apologized for being “overly emotional.”
Aiden relaxed.
His contempt returned with full force.
One evening, he sat across from her at the kitchen island and revised the settlement with a red pen.
“You’ll keep the sedan.”
“How generous.”
He missed the bitterness because she smiled.
“You don’t need a house this size.”
“No.”
“And shared custody will begin once the baby is old enough.”
Alice’s hand froze around her water glass.
Aiden had shown no interest in prenatal appointments.
Now he wanted custody.
“Why?”
He looked offended.
“It’s my child.”
“Do you know the name of my obstetrician?”
His eyes hardened.
“Don’t turn this into a performance.”
Alice lowered her gaze.
“I’m sorry.”
That was what he wanted.
He placed a new document in front of her.
“Sign this acknowledgment now. The rest can be completed at court.”
Alice scanned the page.
It authorized the transfer of “legacy marital holdings.”
The final account.
She picked up the pen.
Aiden watched her hand.
Then Alice deliberately dropped it.
“My fingers are swollen.”
“We can try again tomorrow.”
He hid his frustration poorly.
Alice folded the paper and returned it.
“Bring everything to court. I’ll sign once.”
Aiden smiled.
