Chapter 10 - The Voice on the Phone

“Mr. Foster,” Judge Holloway said through the speaker, “are you in immediate danger?”

Kevin reached toward the phone.

Thomas covered it with his hand.

“Yes.”

Kevin’s face twisted.

“He’s confused. Your Honor, he fell.”

The judge’s voice hardened.

“I heard the impact. I also heard your statement before it.”

Brenda dropped her cigarette into the empty cup.

Kevin stared at her.

“You said the line wasn’t connected.”

“I didn’t know.”

Thomas had activated the call before Kevin entered the kitchen. Judge Holloway had been listening during the entire confrontation.

Claire had anticipated that Kevin might interfere with the hearing.

Before her arrest, she had arranged the emergency call.

The kitchen doorbell rang.

Kevin looked toward it.

Police lights flashed across the white cabinets.

Thomas’s knees weakened.

He gripped the island.

Kevin stepped closer.

“You did this to your own son?”

Thomas met his eyes.

“No. You did.”

Kevin grabbed the property folder.

Thomas held on.

For several seconds, father and son stood on opposite sides of the marble island, fighting over the papers that had exposed what remained of their relationship.

Then Brenda spoke.

“Let go of it, Kevin.”

He turned.

She was holding her second cellphone.

The screen displayed an audio recording.

“What is that?”

“Insurance.”

“You recorded me?”

“I recorded everything.”

Kevin’s disbelief turned into fury.

“You were leaving me.”

“You were planning to kill your father.”

“You planned it with me!”

Brenda stepped backward as he moved toward her.

The front door burst open.

Two police officers entered with weapons lowered but ready.

“Hands where we can see them!”

Kevin stopped.

For one second, Thomas thought he would surrender.

Then Kevin grabbed the wineglass and hurled it toward the wall.

The officers forced him onto the floor.

Brenda raised both hands.

Thomas remained standing beside the island.

His cheek burned.

His chest hurt.

But for the first time in months, nobody was ordering him to leave his own kitchen.

As Kevin was handcuffed, he shouted, “Tell them, Dad! Tell them this is a family misunderstanding!”

Thomas looked at the man who had once been a little boy asleep on his shoulder.

Then he looked away.

May you like

“It stopped being a misunderstanding when you raised your hand.”

👉 Kevin was under arrest, but the forged deed was only one part of the crime—and Brenda’s secret recordings revealed that they had targeted other elderly homeowners before Thomas.
