Chapter 11 - The Houses Before His

Brenda agreed to cooperate within two hours.

She did not do it out of remorse.

She did it to save herself.

Her recordings revealed that Kevin had been using Thomas’s property-management contacts to identify elderly landlords with no close relatives.

He offered to help with repairs.

Then he collected signatures, medical information, and banking details.

Three owners had lost buildings through fraudulent transfers.

One had died shortly after challenging the paperwork.

Police reopened the case.

Daniel, Brenda’s secret boyfriend, was not merely waiting to run away with her.

He was the notary clerk who processed the forged documents.

Together, the three had created a system.

Kevin found the victims.

Brenda gained their trust.

Daniel legalized the theft.

Thomas listened as Detective Sarah Monroe explained everything in his living room.

He felt sick.

“My company introduced Kevin to those people.”

“You didn’t know,” the detective said.

“I should have.”

“You trusted your son.”

Thomas stared at his bruised reflection in the dark television screen.

“That isn’t always a virtue.”

Claire was released when police proved Kevin had planted stolen files in her car.

She entered the mansion carrying two boxes of evidence.

“Judge Holloway suspended the competency hearing,” she said. “The deed has been frozen.”

“Can Kevin still claim part of the house as my heir?”

Claire sat across from him.

“The trust answers that.”

Elaine had created a clause Thomas had forgotten.

Any beneficiary convicted of financial exploitation against another family member would lose all rights to the trust.

Kevin had not only failed to steal the house.

His actions could cost him every legitimate inheritance he might have received.

Thomas expected satisfaction.

Instead, he felt grief.

Elaine had built the clause because she feared Kevin’s gambling and entitlement long before her death.

She had seen what Thomas refused to see.

Brenda entered the room under police supervision to retrieve personal belongings.

She looked smaller without the red dress and cigarette.

“Kevin says you destroyed his life,” she told Thomas.

Thomas replied calmly.

“I stopped him from destroying mine.”

Brenda hesitated.

“He wasn’t always like this.”

“Neither were you.”

She lowered her eyes.

As officers led her out, Thomas noticed she left one envelope on the table.

Inside was a photograph of Kevin meeting Daniel beside another elderly man’s house.

On the back was a date.
