Chapter 9 - The Morning of the Strike

Kevin did not mention the stolen papers.

That frightened Thomas more than shouting would have.

At breakfast, his son acted cheerful.

He poured coffee.

He asked whether Thomas had slept well.

Brenda smoked in the doorway, avoiding both men’s eyes.

“The hearing is at ten,” Kevin said. “A judge will decide what’s best for you.”

“My attorney will attend.”

Kevin smiled.

“Claire Reed won’t be coming.”

Thomas’s hand stopped over the soup pot.

“What did you do?”

“Nothing.”

Kevin showed him a news article on his phone.

Claire had been arrested before dawn for allegedly stealing confidential property records.

The accusation was false.

But it would delay her long enough for the hearing to proceed.

Thomas reached for his own phone.

Kevin knocked it away.

“You don’t need that.”

Thomas turned toward Brenda.

She looked down.

“You knew.”

“I warned you,” she said.

Thomas felt pressure building in his chest.

He reached for the inhaler in his apron.

Kevin grabbed his arm.

“No performances for the judge.”

“Let go.”

“You always use your health when you don’t get your way.”

“I can’t breathe.”

Kevin’s grip tightened.

Thomas shoved his hand away.

The movement was weak, but Kevin’s face transformed.

Years of resentment erupted at once.

“You always thought you were better than me.”

“I gave you every opportunity.”

“You controlled everything.”

“I stopped paying your debts.”

“You humiliated me!”

Kevin planted his foot.

Thomas saw the strike coming only a fraction before it landed.

The palm crashed across his cheek.

His glasses fell.

His hip struck the island.

Brenda smiled and said, “He finally learned.”

But Thomas had learned something different.

His son no longer feared witnesses.

Kevin believed the house, the court, and even Brenda already belonged to him.

Thomas swept aside the newspaper.

The sealed folder appeared.

Kevin froze.

Thomas pressed the one-button phone.

A woman answered.

Not Claire.

Judge Marian Holloway.

Thomas placed the phone on the marble.

“It was always mine.”

Kevin stared at the folder.

Thomas opened it two inches.

Inside were the original trust documents Elaine had created years earlier.

The home had never belonged to Thomas personally.

It belonged to an irrevocable family trust controlled by an independent trustee.

And the trustee was Judge Holloway’s retired sister, Margaret.

Thomas looked at Kevin.

“I’m ready now.”

👉 Kevin had forged Thomas’s signature on a house Thomas had no legal power to transfer—and the judge had heard the assault happen live.
