Chapter 1 - The Slap in His Own Home

“Shut up, old man.”
Kevin Foster’s palm struck the side of his father’s face before Thomas could finish the sentence.
The wooden spoon flew from Thomas’s hand.
His glasses hit the hardwood floor.
His hip slammed against the marble island, sending a sharp bolt of pain through his frail body.
For a moment, the sixty-eight-year-old could not breathe.
His fingers clawed at the countertop as his knees threatened to collapse.
Behind him, the soup continued simmering on the stove.
Across the doorway, Brenda took a slow drag from her cigarette.
Kevin’s wife did not rush forward.
She did not look horrified.
She smiled.
“He finally learned,” she said.
Thomas stared at his fallen glasses.
The left side of his face burned, but the humiliation hurt more.
This was his kitchen.
His stove.
His marble island.
His house.
Yet his only son stood over him as though he were an unwanted servant.
Kevin leaned close enough for Thomas to smell the coffee on his breath.
“You embarrassed Brenda again.”
Thomas’s chest tightened.
“I only asked her not to smoke near my oxygen medication.”
“You don’t make rules here anymore.”
Thomas slowly lifted his eyes.
Kevin pointed toward the narrow hallway leading to the small guest room where they had forced him to sleep.
“You own nothing here.”
Brenda stepped into the kitchen, tapping ash into Thomas’s empty coffee cup.
Thomas looked from his son to the folded newspaper on the island.
Beneath it, the corner of a thick black folder remained hidden.
Exactly where he had placed it before breakfast.
His right hand moved toward the newspaper.
Kevin noticed.
“What are you reaching for?”
Thomas said nothing.
He swept the newspaper aside.
The folder appeared.
Beside it lay his old cellphone.
Kevin’s anger vanished for one startled second.
Brenda lowered her cigarette.
Thomas pressed one button on the phone.
Then he placed his palm firmly over the folder.
His shaking stopped.
“It was always mine,” he said.
A woman’s faint voice answered through the speaker.
Kevin’s face lost its color.
Thomas looked directly at the son who had just struck him.

“I’m ready now.”
👉 Kevin believed the folder contained an old man’s useless papers—but one signature inside it could take away everything he and Brenda had stolen.
