Chapter 12 - A Father on the Witness Stand

The trial began seven months later.

Kevin wore a navy suit and the expression of a wounded son.

His attorney described Thomas as controlling, vindictive, and mentally unstable.

“He cut Kevin off financially,” the lawyer told the jury. “Then he manufactured a criminal case to punish him.”

Thomas sat behind the prosecutor.

His hands trembled.

Not from confusion.

From the weight of what he was about to do.

When called to the stand, he walked slowly past Kevin.

Their eyes met.

Kevin whispered, “Dad.”

Thomas continued walking.

The defense attorney questioned his memory.

“What did you eat the morning of the alleged assault?”

“Eggs, wheat toast, and coffee.”

“What time?”

“Eight seventeen.”

“How can you be certain?”

“Because my son struck me at eight twenty-three, and the emergency call recorded the time.”

The attorney shifted tactics.

“You resent Kevin, don’t you?”

“I grieve him.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

“It is my answer.”

The courtroom became still.

Thomas described the missing mail, the false medical claims, the locked door, and the forged papers.

Then prosecutors played Brenda’s recordings.

Kevin’s own voice filled the courtroom.

Once the court signs, the old man becomes a guest in our house.

Another recording followed.

If he falls down the stairs after I become guardian, nobody will question it.

Kevin stared at the table.

Brenda testified next.

She admitted her role and identified Daniel.

Daniel, facing decades in prison, revealed where the missing homeowner had been buried.

Kevin had killed him after the man discovered the fraud.

A murder charge was added.

When Thomas stepped down, Kevin suddenly stood.

“You made me this way!”

The judge ordered him to sit.

Kevin pointed at his father.

“You never respected me!”

Thomas stopped near the aisle.

“I loved you.”

His voice broke for the first time.

“But I confused rescuing you with loving you. Every debt I paid taught you that someone else would always suffer for your choices.”

Kevin’s face collapsed.

Thomas continued.

“I will not teach you that lesson again.”

He returned to his seat without looking back.

👉 The jury now knew the truth, but Kevin still possessed one final piece of evidence he claimed would prove Thomas had planned the entire downfall himself.
