Chapter 13 - Elaine’s Last Recording

Kevin’s attorney introduced an old audio file found in Thomas’s office.

Elaine’s voice filled the courtroom.

Thomas must never allow Kevin to control the properties.

The defense claimed Thomas had used his late wife’s fear to design a trap.

Then the recording continued.

If Kevin ever tries to take what isn’t his, Thomas will blame himself. He always does.

Thomas lowered his head.

Elaine’s voice was warm and tired.

So I am leaving this message for both of them.

Kevin, your father’s love is not weakness. Stop treating it like an account you can drain.

Kevin’s expression changed.

He had never heard the full message.

Elaine continued.

Thomas, protecting our son from consequences will not save him. It will only teach him to become more dangerous.

The courtroom was silent enough to hear Kevin breathing.

I hope neither of you ever needs this recording. But if you do, tell the truth. Even when the truth breaks your heart.

The audio ended.

Kevin’s supposed evidence had become Elaine’s final warning.

His attorney asked for a recess.

The judge refused.

Closing arguments began that afternoon.

The prosecutor did not describe Thomas as a helpless victim.

She described him as a father who had been manipulated through love.

“Kevin Foster believed his father would remain silent because speaking would hurt too much,” she told the jury. “He mistook pain for permission.”

The jury deliberated for six hours.

Thomas waited in a private room with Claire and Detective Monroe.

He held Elaine’s wedding ring in his palm.

“I should have listened to her.”

Claire sat beside him.

“You are listening now.”

The bailiff entered.

“We have a verdict.”

Thomas returned to the courtroom.

Kevin stood at the defense table.

For a moment, he looked like the frightened teenager Thomas had once collected from a police station after a reckless-driving arrest.

Thomas had paid the fine.

Repaired the car.

Hidden the incident from Elaine.

He understood now that the first lie had not protected Kevin.

It had protected him from becoming better.

The jury foreman stood.

“Guilty.”

The word was repeated for fraud.

Elder exploitation.

Forgery.

Conspiracy.

Attempted murder.

And murder.

Kevin closed his eyes.

Thomas did not celebrate.

He simply breathed.

👉 Kevin had finally been convicted, but Thomas’s greatest act of justice would come after the trial, when he decided what should happen to the home his son tried to steal.
