Chapter 4 - The Signature That Wasn’t His

Attorney Claire Reed arrived at the mansion disguised as a home-care consultant.
Kevin welcomed her enthusiastically.
“My father needs supervision,” he said.
Thomas sat quietly at the kitchen table while Claire asked routine questions.
His date of birth.
The current president.
The value of his monthly utilities.
The names of his medications.
Thomas answered every question correctly.
Kevin interrupted repeatedly.
“He rehearsed this.”
Claire ignored him.
Then she asked Thomas to describe his property holdings.
Thomas named every building, mortgage balance, tenant contract, and tax deadline from memory.
Brenda’s smile tightened.
Afterward, Claire followed Thomas into the pantry under the pretense of inspecting food safety.
She spoke quietly.
“Someone filed a deed transferring this home into a company called KBF Residential Holdings.”
Thomas gripped the shelf.
“KBF?”
“Kevin and Brenda Foster.”
“I never signed that.”
“The document was notarized two weeks ago.”
“I was in the hospital two weeks ago.”
“I know.”
Claire had already obtained security footage from the notary’s office.
Kevin had appeared with an older man wearing Thomas’s coat and hat.
The camera did not show the impersonator’s face clearly.
But it proved Thomas had not been present.
“Can you stop the transfer?” Thomas asked.
“Yes, but we need to move carefully. If Kevin realizes we know, he may destroy evidence.”
Thomas thought about his missing bank statements.
“What else has he done?”
Claire placed a list inside a grocery catalog.
Kevin had opened credit lines against two rental properties.
He had redirected income from six tenants.
He had also filed a petition asking the court to declare Thomas mentally incompetent.
The hearing was scheduled in nine days.
Thomas stared through the pantry door at his son.
Kevin was laughing with Brenda beside Elaine’s kitchen island.
Nine days.
If Kevin won, he would control Thomas’s finances, medical decisions, and property.
Thomas’s voice trembled.
“What do I do?”
“You behave exactly as you have been behaving.”
“You want me to let them humiliate me?”
“I want them to believe you have no idea what’s coming.”
Claire gave him an old cellphone programmed to call her with one button.
She also handed him a sealed property folder.
“Hide this somewhere they feel entitled to ignore.”
Thomas looked toward the folded newspaper Kevin never read.
For the first time since his son moved in, Thomas felt something stronger than fear.
