Chapter 5 - The Doctor’s Betrayal

The witness supporting Kevin’s petition was Dr. Warren Hale.

Thomas had known him since college.

Warren had treated Elaine during her final illness and stood beside Thomas at her funeral.

His written statement claimed Thomas suffered from confusion, paranoia, and impaired judgment.

Thomas called him from the old cellphone.

“Why did you sign it?”

Warren remained silent.

“Kevin showed me recordings,” he finally said.

“What recordings?”

“You shouting. Forgetting appointments. Accusing Brenda of theft.”

“She was stealing from me.”

“I didn’t know that.”

“You didn’t ask.”

Warren exhaled.

“Kevin said you refused a cognitive evaluation.”

“That is a lie.”

Another silence.

Then Warren confessed that Kevin had threatened him.

Years earlier, Warren had become dependent on prescription pain medication after surgery. Kevin had obtained pharmacy records and threatened to expose him unless he signed the statement.

“I’m sorry,” Warren whispered.

Thomas closed his eyes.

Sorry did not restore trust.

“Will you correct the record?”

“If I do, I could lose my license.”

“If you don’t, I could lose my life.”

Warren began crying.

Thomas did not comfort him.

“Decide what kind of man you want to be.”

That evening, Brenda complained that the roast was dry.

She pushed her plate away.

“Elaine must have done all the cooking.”

Thomas looked at her.

“Don’t speak about my wife.”

Brenda smiled.

“I heard she wanted to sell this place before she died.”

Thomas’s fork stopped halfway to his mouth.

Elaine had wanted no such thing.

Only three people knew the terms of her estate plan.

Thomas.

Claire.

And Kevin.

“What did Kevin tell you?” Thomas asked.

Brenda leaned closer.

“That your wife knew you couldn’t handle money alone.”

Kevin entered before Thomas could respond.

He saw the tension and placed both hands on the table.

“Dad, tomorrow we’re moving you downstairs.”

“Why?”

“Stairs are dangerous.”

“My room is already downstairs.”

Kevin smiled.

“Not that room.”

He meant the former storage room beside the garage.

No proper window.

No private bathroom.

Thomas slowly realized they were not merely trying to take ownership.
