Chapter 1 - The Skillet

The skillet struck before Daniel even entered the room.
Lily Carter sat strapped into her high chair beside the dining table, tiny fingers reaching toward a piece of skillet bread.
Vanessa grabbed the pan.
Then she slammed it hard against the fifteen-month-old girl.
Lily toppled from the chair and hit the floor crying.
“Trash like you doesn't deserve to sit at the same table as us.”
Margaret Carter did not rush toward her granddaughter.
She remained beside the table.
Watching.
Daniel heard the crash from the hallway.
The door flew open.
He saw Lily on the floor.
For half a second, the entire room went silent.
Then Daniel ran.
“Lily, wake up!”
He lifted her against his chest.
She was conscious.
Terrified.
Crying against his shirt.
Daniel moved her behind him.
Then he saw the skillet lying beside the overturned high chair.
Vanessa actually smiled.
Daniel grabbed the pan and hurled it toward her.
It struck her and sent her staggering backward.
Margaret jumped up.
Instead of checking Lily, she pointed at the child.
“A bastard like her deserves exactly that!”
Daniel turned.
He drove one furious punch into Margaret.
She crashed backward against the dining table.
The table overturned.
Plates shattered.
Food scattered across the polished floor.
Daniel immediately moved back toward Lily and shielded her with his body.
“YOU ABUSED MY CHILD. YOU’RE FINISHED!”
Vanessa’s expression changed.
Not fear.
Calculation.
Her hand slipped toward the phone sitting against a fruit bowl.
Daniel noticed it.
The camera was pointed directly at him.
Recording.
But not at Lily’s high chair.
Not at the place Vanessa had been standing.
Only at Daniel.
Then Margaret, still on the floor, looked at Vanessa and mouthed something.
Daniel could not hear it.
He did not need to.
This had not simply been an argument that became violent.
May you like
They had expected him to come through that door.
And they had positioned a camera before he arrived.
