Chapter 3 - The Petition
The petition was forty-three pages long.
Daniel’s attorney read it beside Lily’s hospital bed.
Margaret accused Daniel of emotional instability.
Violent outbursts.
Neglect.
Excessive work travel.
Poor judgment.
She requested temporary authority over Lily’s living arrangements and certain financial matters until Daniel underwent evaluation.
Vanessa provided a supporting statement.
It described Daniel as unpredictable.
It claimed Lily often cried when he entered a room.
It mentioned bruises.
Missed pediatric appointments.
Late-night arguments.
Every allegation contained just enough truth to sound believable.
Daniel did travel.
Lily had bruised her knee learning to walk.
He had missed one doctor’s appointment because a flight was canceled.
He had argued with Vanessa.
But everything had been stripped of context.
The most alarming section came near the end.
Margaret requested temporary supervisory authority over the Carter Legacy Trust.
Daniel stopped reading.
Lily was the trust’s beneficiary.
Daniel was trustee.
Margaret had no current control.
Why would custody allegations suddenly include financial authority?
His attorney did not know.
Then Daniel received a call from his father’s former estate lawyer, Charles Mercer.
Charles had heard that Margaret filed something involving the trust.
He sounded alarmed.
The Carter Legacy Trust contained far more than Daniel had ever discussed with Vanessa.
Property.
Investment accounts.
And controlling shares in Carter Holdings.
Daniel managed those assets for Lily.
But there was one unusual clause written by Daniel’s late father, William.
Control ultimately belonged to William’s first legally recognized biological grandchild.
That child was Lily.
Margaret had hated the clause from the moment she learned about it.
Daniel knew she resented losing influence over the family company.
He never believed she would target Lily because of it.
Then Charles said something stranger.
Margaret had challenged Lily’s status once before.
Shortly after Lily was born.
She claimed Lily might not be Daniel’s biological child.
Daniel remembered the accusations.
His late wife, Grace, had been devastated.
Daniel ended all discussion immediately.
He never knew Margaret had gone further.
She secretly requested a DNA test using material obtained without Daniel’s permission.
According to Margaret, the test excluded Daniel as Lily’s father.
Daniel had never seen the report.
He had refused to entertain it.
Charles had.

The report Margaret showed the family was not the same report the laboratory later sent directly to him.
