Chapter 8 - Grace’s Last Document
Charles retrieved the document from his secure archive.
Grace had created an independent protective trust for Lily using assets from her own family.
It was separate from the Carter Legacy Trust.
Daniel knew Grace left money for Lily.
He did not know how carefully she structured it.
Grace named Daniel as primary guardian.
Rachel as first backup.
An independent trust company as financial administrator.
And she included one extraordinary clause.
If anyone tried to challenge Lily’s paternity using evidence obtained outside an accredited laboratory and proper legal procedure, that person would automatically lose any advisory role connected to Grace’s estate.
Margaret had been named originally as a secondary family adviser.
Grace removed her.
Completely.
That happened before Grace died.
Margaret knew.
Her signature acknowledged receipt.
Daniel finally understood why Margaret hated Grace even after her death.
Grace had seen through her.
And she had protected Lily.
The independent trust contained several million dollars.
Margaret could never control it.
Vanessa could never control it.
But the Carter Legacy Trust remained vulnerable to litigation if Lily’s status could be clouded.
That became their target.
Charles also preserved a letter Grace wrote Daniel.
He had been instructed to deliver it only if anyone challenged Lily’s parentage after Grace’s death.
He had waited because Daniel refused to entertain Margaret’s accusations and no formal challenge occurred.
Now one had.
Daniel opened the letter alone.
Grace wrote that Lily was his daughter.
That she had never betrayed him.
That Margaret’s obsession with family bloodlines frightened her.
Most importantly, Grace warned Daniel not to confuse keeping peace with protecting a child.
He read that sentence three times.
He had spent years avoiding conflict with Margaret.
Grace understood the cost before he did.
Daniel cried for the first time since the kitchen incident.
Not from weakness.
From recognition.
He had allowed his mother access because she was family.
He allowed Vanessa authority because she was his wife.
Neither role guaranteed goodness.
Meanwhile investigators were building the criminal case.
Forged medical records.
Evidence manipulation.
Child endangerment.
Conspiracy.
Fraudulent trust filings.
The original kitchen assault.
But Vanessa still had one weapon.
She released Daniel’s cropped video anonymously.
Within hours, it spread online.
The clip showed only a furious father throwing a skillet and punching an older woman.
