Chapter 6 - The Staircase
Lily’s fall had seemed minor at the time.
She bruised her shoulder.
Cried for ten minutes.
Then returned to playing.
Vanessa said Lily slipped while trying to climb.
Margaret said she witnessed it.
Daniel believed them.
Now investigators reopened the mansion security archive.
The staircase camera had been offline for exactly five minutes that afternoon.
Margaret’s tablet had accessed the system.
Again.
A hallway camera farther away remained active.
Its angle did not show Lily falling.
But it showed Vanessa carrying Lily toward the stairs.
Thirty seconds later, Vanessa walked back alone.
Margaret entered the hallway.
Then came Lily’s crying.
Daniel watched the clip without speaking.
There was no proof Vanessa pushed her.
There was proof the story about Lily approaching the stairs alone was false.
Margaret’s deleted timeline contained another entry.
“Bath — no witness.”
Daniel remembered that too.
A month after the staircase incident, Lily developed a frightening red mark on her arm after bath time.
Vanessa claimed the water had suddenly become too hot.
Daniel blamed the old faucet.
It was replaced.
The plumber’s original report said the fixture worked normally.
Daniel had never seen that report.
Vanessa had told him the plumber confirmed a temperature-control failure.
Another lie.
The pattern was emerging.
Small injuries.
Plausible explanations.
Daniel away or distracted.
Vanessa nearby.
Margaret backing up the story.
Then photographs appeared afterward.
Lily crying.
Daniel looking exhausted.
A house that supposedly felt unsafe.
They were creating a history.
Not enough to seriously injure Lily.
Enough to build paperwork.
Enough to create questions.
Enough to prepare a court.
Daniel’s anger became almost unbearable.
Then his attorney reminded him what mattered.
Evidence.
Not revenge.
Daniel gave police unrestricted access to the relevant home security systems.
He voluntarily provided the complete kitchen footage, including his own violent reaction.
He agreed to evaluation.
He cooperated with child-welfare investigators.
He did everything Margaret’s petition claimed he would refuse to do.
Vanessa and Margaret did the opposite.
They began blaming each other.
Vanessa claimed Margaret designed everything.
Margaret claimed Vanessa became cruel independently.
Then investigators recovered a voice recording from Margaret’s tablet.
It was made accidentally during a planning conversation.
Margaret’s voice could be heard clearly.
She was describing exactly how Vanessa should provoke Daniel in the kitchen.
Then Vanessa asked a question.
What if Daniel didn’t hit anyone?
Margaret answered that they would move to “the second plan.”
