Chapter 2 - The Cropped Video
Daniel called emergency services himself.
He did not let Vanessa or Margaret touch Lily.
Paramedics examined the toddler in the mansion.
She had bruising and a frightening fall, but no immediately apparent life-threatening injury.
Daniel still insisted she be taken to the hospital.
He rode beside her.
Before the ambulance even left the estate, Vanessa sent a video to an attorney.
It showed Daniel throwing the skillet.
It showed Daniel striking Margaret.
It showed overturned furniture and screaming.
It did not show what happened to Lily first.
The recording began approximately four seconds before Daniel entered the kitchen.
Vanessa claimed she started filming because she feared him.
Margaret claimed Daniel had become unstable for months.
Their story was ready immediately.
Too ready.
Daniel handed police his phone.
His travel records.
His messages.
He told them exactly what he had done.
He did not pretend throwing the skillet was calm or controlled.
He did not hide the punch.
He only asked investigators to find out what happened before he entered.
The mansion’s kitchen security camera should have answered that.
It didn’t.
The camera had been disabled twelve minutes earlier.
The system log showed the shutdown came from Margaret’s tablet.
Margaret claimed she accidentally pressed something.
Then Daniel remembered another device.
A baby monitor.
Lily had suffered a fever the week before, so Daniel had temporarily placed a portable monitor near the dining area to watch her while he worked from the adjoining study.
Vanessa hated it.
She said it made the house feel like a hospital.
Daniel thought he had removed it.
He had moved only the screen.
The camera remained hidden behind a decorative plant.
Its recordings automatically backed up to Daniel’s phone.
At the hospital, he opened the app.
His hands began shaking.
The video showed Vanessa approaching Lily with the skillet.
It showed Margaret watching.
It showed Lily being struck.
Then it captured something that happened twenty seconds before Daniel entered.
Margaret leaned close to Vanessa.
No one else was in the kitchen.
Her voice was perfectly clear.
She told Vanessa to make sure Daniel saw enough to lose control.
Daniel replayed the sentence twice.
The abuse had not merely been tolerated.
It had been staged to provoke him.
But why would his own mother help someone hurt her granddaughter just to make Daniel angry?
The answer arrived from Daniel’s attorney less than an hour later.
