Chapter 10 - Rachel Wanted Lily to Stop Waiting for Me

“I hated watching her wait.”

Rachel said it during a meeting with our attorneys present.

At first I thought I'd heard wrong.

“What?”

“Lily waited for your calls. Your packages. Your leave dates. Every time something changed, she cried.”

I stared at her.

“So you told her I died?”

“Not at first.”

The major twist was painfully ordinary.

There had been no original plan to erase me.

Rachel began by saying Daddy was too busy.

Then Daddy couldn't call.

Then Daddy might not come home for a long time.

One night Lily asked:

“Did Daddy die like Uncle Tommy?”

Rachel was exhausted.

Angry.

Already involved with Brad.

And she said:

“Maybe.”

Lily cried.

Rachel comforted her.

Then the next morning Lily asked whether Daddy was dead.

Rachel had a choice.

Correct the lie.

Or preserve the emotional distance it created.

She chose the lie.

Because once Lily stopped waiting for me, Rachel's new life became easier.

That was the twist.

The death story wasn't originally about insurance.

It wasn't Charles Wynn’s idea.

It wasn't part of a sophisticated scheme.

It came from one selfish moment Rachel repeated because correcting it would expose everything else.

Three earlier clues changed meaning.

The hidden letters weren't evidence of financial fraud. They were tools of emotional erasure.

The fake divorce papers were for Brad.

The widow status was for financing.

Three separate lies served three different audiences.

Rachel had not created one master plan.

She had built a life from increasingly incompatible stories.

Eventually they collided.

And Lily was crushed between them.

I looked at Rachel.

“You didn't want her to stop hurting.”

“Yes, I did.”

“No. You wanted her to stop inconveniencing the life you were building.”

Rachel covered her face.

She couldn't deny it.

That was the first time I understood the betrayal completely.

And knowing did not make it easier.
