Chapter 9 - Rachel Was Not Charles’s Partner

Rachel quit her job two days after learning the transaction review had widened.

That surprised me.

I expected Wynn to fire her.

Instead, he issued a bland internal message stating she had resigned for personal reasons.

Too clean.

My attorney warned me not to assume conspiracy.

So we kept separating facts from emotion.

Brad ended his relationship with Rachel.

He also agreed to provide a statement about Lily being left outside.

Rachel moved into the townhouse.

I remained in our family home with Lily under temporary arrangements made through counsel while parenting issues were addressed properly.

Then Rachel called at 2:00 a.m.

“Daniel, Charles is going to blame everything on me.”

I sat up.

“What everything?”

Silence.

“Rachel?”

“The Bell deal. The others.”

“Others?”

Another silence.

“How many?”

“Six.”

My stomach tightened.

Six military-family-related property transactions.

Wynn had developed a niche strategy.

Identify owners under financial stress.

Offer quick sales.

Use community relationships to reduce resistance.

Rachel’s military-spouse identity helped create trust.

Were all deals improper?

No.

Some sellers apparently understood exactly what they were doing.

Others had complained.

“What did Charles tell you to do?”

“Nothing illegal.”

That phrasing told me enough.

“What did you do that you're afraid he'll expose?”

Rachel cried quietly.

“I signed statements saying I’d explained things I hadn't explained.”

There it was.

Not mastermind.

Not innocent employee.

Participant.

Then she told me why she had been so desperate to make me appear absent.

One of Wynn’s lenders had asked about household liabilities connected to the townhouse.

Rachel did not want my income, debts, or ownership interests examined.

So she represented herself as widowed.

It made the financing cleaner.

The lie about my death had begun as a financial convenience.

Then she repeated it at home.

Eventually, even Lily was forced to live inside it.

But Rachel still hadn't explained why she hid my letters.

That answer came next.

And it had nothing to do with money.
