Chapter 14 - Rachel Asked Me Not to Take Lily Away

Our last major confrontation happened in the kitchen.

No party.

No Brad.

No uniforms.

Just two tired adults.

Rachel sat across from me.

“I know you want primary custody.”

“I want Lily safe.”

“You think she isn't safe with me.”

“I found her in freezing mud.”

Rachel looked down.

“I know.”

“You allowed a man you were seeing to discipline her while she believed her father was dead.”

“I know.”

“You intercepted my mail.”

“I know.”

“You told different lies to everyone around you.”

“I know.”

She cried.

I waited.

Then she said:

“Please don't take her away completely.”

That was the first request I believed came from love rather than image.

“I don't want to erase you from her life.”

Rachel looked up.

“After everything?”

“I know what that feels like.”

She started crying harder.

But I continued.

“That doesn't mean you get whatever access you want.”

She nodded.

“Supervision?”

“At first, probably.”

“Therapy?”

“Yes.”

“Whatever they recommend?”

“If it's appropriate.”

She wiped her face.

“I'll do it.”

I studied her.

“Don't do it to get me back.”

“I know.”

“Don't do it to look good.”

“I know.”

“Do it because Lily deserves a mother who can tell the truth even when it makes her look terrible.”

Rachel nodded.

Then she asked the question I'd been expecting for weeks.

“What about us?”

I looked at my wedding ring.

I still wore it.

Habit more than hope.

“We’re not there.”

“Are we divorcing?”

“I think so.”

She closed her eyes.

No screaming.

No bargaining.

That was new.

The next morning, we authorized our attorneys to proceed with a structured separation while parenting arrangements continued under professional guidance.

There would be no secret paperwork.

No fake signatures.

May you like

No invented deaths.

Whatever ended between us would end in reality.
