Chapter 13 - We Rebuilt Lily’s Timeline

One of the hardest parts was helping Lily understand the past year.

Children organize time differently.

Deployment.

Birthdays.

Christmas.

School.

Daddy alive.

Daddy dead.

Brad arriving.

Letters disappearing.

Everything had become tangled.

So her therapist suggested a simple timeline.

We used photographs.

Not to prove Rachel was evil.

To restore reality.

A picture of Lily holding the stuffed bear I mailed.

Alive.

A screenshot of one video call.

Alive.

A postcard.

Alive.

A photograph from Rachel's promotion.

Still alive.

Lily began understanding that my absence had been physical, not permanent.

I realized how much damage a repeated lie can do to a child's sense of sequence.

Rachel participated when appropriate.

She did not correct Lily defensively.

She did not say “you misunderstood.”

She said:

“I told you that.”

That mattered.

Meanwhile, our financial disentanglement progressed.

The townhouse became part of the marital-property discussions.

The fake widow representation was documented and addressed through the lender and legal channels.

Our joint savings losses were traced.

Rachel could not simply call the townhouse “for Lily” and keep control of it.

Lily’s ownership interest required careful handling.

Again, no instant solution.

Then the final major piece of the Wynn matter appeared.

Rachel had once refused to close a seventh transaction.

A disabled veteran believed he was being pressured.

Rachel told Charles the deal felt wrong.

He threatened her commission.

She still walked away.

That detail complicated my view of her.

Rachel was not someone without a conscience.

She was someone who repeatedly ignored it until consequences became personal.

That was worse in one way.

Better in another.

It meant change was possible.

Not guaranteed.

Possible.

May you like

And that mattered when we reached the final question.

What kind of mother would she be after the lies were exposed?
