Chapter 3 - Rachel Had Been Preparing a Life Without Me

I went downstairs carrying the fake email.

Most guests had gone.

Brad remained.

So did Rachel’s sister, Melissa, and an older couple from the neighborhood.

Rachel looked at the paper.

Her shoulders stiffened.

“Where did you get that?”

“Wrong question.”

Brad stepped forward.

“Look, man, everybody’s emotional.”

I turned toward him.

“Don’t.”

He stopped.

I wasn’t interested in fighting him.

Not yet.

I held up the email.

“Did you write this?”

Rachel said nothing.

“Did Brad?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

“I did.”

At least she admitted it.

Melissa closed her eyes.

Brad stared at Rachel.

Apparently even he didn’t know everything.

“Why?”

Rachel folded her arms.

“You weren’t here.”

“That’s your explanation for forging messages from me?”

“You were gone for fourteen months.”

“I was deployed.”

“You volunteered for this life.”

“So you told our daughter I died?”

Her jaw tightened.

“I told her you weren’t coming back.”

“No. She specifically said dead.”

Rachel looked away.

That distinction mattered.

Then Brad made his first useful contribution.

“You told me Daniel had signed divorce papers.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

Brad’s confidence disappeared.

“She said the marriage was legally over.”

Rachel snapped:

“Brad, stop.”

Now it was his turn to stare at her.

“You said he’d filed.”

“I said he was going to.”

“No. You showed me paperwork.”

My attention sharpened.

“What paperwork?”

Rachel walked toward the kitchen.

“Everyone needs to leave.”

I blocked her path without touching her.

“What paperwork?”

Brad took out his phone.

He had photographs Rachel sent months earlier.

A petition for dissolution.

My name.

Her name.

A signature that looked vaguely like mine.

It wasn’t.

The document had never been filed with a court.

It was a draft.

But Brad had believed it was real.

Rachel had built two separate realities.

For Lily, I was dead.

For Brad, I was divorced.

For me, we were still married and struggling but intact.

I finally understood what she had been doing.

She didn’t simply want me gone.

She needed different people to believe different versions of why I was gone.

Then Melissa quietly said:

“Daniel, ask her about the survivor benefits.”

Rachel turned toward her sister so fast I knew immediately.

Money had entered the story.
