Chapter 10 - Natalie Chose What William Was Allowed to Know

The major twist hurt William more than any financial theory.

Natalie had withheld his own medical information.

The report recommended follow-up.

She never told him.

Why?

William’s father had died suddenly at forty-nine.

Natalie feared the diagnosis would psychologically destroy him.

She convinced herself she was protecting him.

Then when Ethan was conceived, additional testing suggested he had not inherited the same mutation.

Natalie treated that as permission to keep the secret.

Isabella knew because she handled parts of the clinic file.

Years later, after Natalie became terminally ill, she regretted it.

That was why the backpack existed.

Why the records were preserved.

Why William’s letter said to open it if Ethan’s records stopped making sense.

Three earlier clues changed meaning.

Natalie warning William about Isabella wasn't because Isabella was a predator from the beginning.

It was because Isabella knew a secret Natalie feared William would discover.

Isabella’s later marriage to William wasn't necessarily planned from the clinic days.

But she recognized him immediately when they “met.”

She chose not to disclose their connection.

And Ethan’s inheritance designation suggested she had complicated feelings toward the boy long before she became his stepmother.

William looked devastated.

“My wife lied to me.”

“Yes.”

“And Isabella lied too.”

“Yes.”

“Everyone decided I couldn't handle my own life.”

That was the theme none of us had seen.

Natalie controlled information out of fear.

Isabella controlled information out of shame.

William controlled rooms and memories by locking them away.

Then Isabella controlled Ethan physically when he threatened to expose the hidden history.

Different motives.

Same behavior.

Control.

But the genetic report created one immediate consequence.

William needed medical evaluation.

And whatever happened with Isabella would no longer be decided solely by anger.

He needed to understand why she had entered his life at all.
