Chapter 14 - William Couldn’t Undo the Wall

Months passed.

The physical hidden chamber was sealed permanently.

Not covered.

Not concealed again.

Removed.

William had contractors open that entire section of wall.

He wanted no child in that house to ever wonder what existed behind it.

He also canceled plans to sell the mansion immediately.

Running away from the house felt too easy.

Instead, he changed how they lived in it.

Doors stayed unlocked where appropriate.

Staff were told Ethan was never to be isolated as punishment.

A child-care professional helped establish routines.

William reduced travel.

Those changes cost him business opportunities.

Good.

Protection that costs nothing is often just language.

Isabella no longer lived there.

Their marriage moved toward formal separation.

William did not rush a final outcome for the sake of drama.

There were property issues.

Legal advice.

Counseling.

Ethan's safety.

Everything took time.

One afternoon I returned to the mansion.

Not as catering staff.

William had invited me because Ethan wanted to show me something.

The oversized painting was gone.

In its place was an open bookshelf.

Ethan stood beside it.

“No wall.”

“No wall,” I agreed.

He smiled.

Then William asked if he could speak with me privately.

“I keep thinking about the first night.”

“What about it?”

“You found him because you stopped.”

“Yes.”

“I was in this house every day.”

He looked toward his son.

“And I didn't notice.”

“That doesn't mean you wanted him hurt.”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“But it means I wasn't paying enough attention.”

That was the correct lesson.

Not endless guilt.

Responsibility.

The next morning, William was scheduled for his first long-term cardiology follow-up.

For the first time in decades, nobody was hiding the result from him.
