Chapter 8 - William Removed Isabella From the House

William stopped treating the crisis like a marital argument.

He followed legal advice.

Isabella was removed from direct contact with Ethan while the child’s safety was assessed.

Staff access codes were changed.

The hidden room was photographed and documented.

The bowl.

Bottle.

Latch.

Key.

No one cleaned anything until appropriate professionals had seen it.

Ethan stayed with William in a nearby hotel suite because the mansion frightened him.

I returned to my own life.

At least I tried.

Then Ethan asked for me.

So I visited.

He drew the hidden room over and over.

In every picture there was one difference.

A red square.

“What’s that?”

“The box.”

“What box?”

“In the little room.”

There had been no box when I opened it.

“Where?”

“Under the floor.”

That sent William back to the mansion with appropriate witnesses.

One floorboard inside the chamber could be lifted.

Beneath it sat a small metal lockbox.

It did not belong to Isabella.

William recognized it.

Natalie’s.

Inside were duplicate fertility-clinic records, letters, and a flash drive.

No dramatic secret confession.

Mostly boring administrative documents.

But one spreadsheet stood out.

It tracked payments connected to three women.

Natalie.

Rachel.

Isabella.

Next to Isabella’s name, Natalie had written:

She didn’t take the money. She returned it.

William stared.

“If Isabella returned money, then what money?”

The records showed an unexplained six-figure transfer into Isabella’s account, followed days later by a transfer back to another entity.

She had not profited.

She had acted as an intermediary.

The question became:

May you like

For whom?

And why?
