Chapter 11 - Isabella Finally Explained Why She Came Back

They met through attorneys.
William did not bring Ethan.
I wasn’t present either.
He told me afterward.
Isabella admitted she recognized him the night they met.
She had followed his career from a distance.
Not obsessively.
Periodically.
She knew Natalie died.
She knew William had a young son.
Then they met at the charity event.
Coincidence.
What she did afterward was not.
She chose not to disclose their past connection.
They began seeing each other.
By the time she understood how serious the relationship had become, telling him felt impossible.
“Why marry me?” William asked.
Her answer surprised him.
“Because I loved you.”
He believed she believed that.
Love did not erase deception.
Then he asked why she made Ethan a beneficiary.
She cried.
“Because I owed him.”
“Owed him what?”
“His mother asked me to tell you.”
The medical secret.
Natalie had apparently changed her mind shortly before death.
She asked Isabella to make sure William eventually learned.
Isabella promised.
Then failed.
She met William years later and became emotionally involved.
The longer she waited, the harder the truth became.
By marrying him, she turned an old omission into an active lie.
Then Ethan found the backpack.
Everything she had avoided was about to surface at once.
She panicked.
“Panicked?” William said. “You locked a five-year-old child in a wall.”
Isabella lowered her head.
“I know.”
“Why the dog bone?”
Her answer made him sick.
She hadn't intended it as food.
The bowl was already inside the unused service compartment from an old pet-storage setup.
But she also admitted she left Ethan there overnight with only one bottle of water.
No explanation softened that.

The truth might explain the panic.
It could not excuse the cruelty.
