Chapter 1 - The Bowl on the Marble Floor

The wrapped gifts slipped from my hands the second I saw my six-year-old daughter reaching toward the dog's food bowl.
"Sophie?! What are you doing?!"
She was sitting barefoot on the marble floor of our villa kitchen in her pale pink dress.
Crying.
Her hair was tangled around her face.
One tiny hand hovered over the brown kibble as if she was deciding whether hunger hurt worse than humiliation.
I ran to her.
The gifts landed behind me with soft thuds.
I dropped to my knees, grabbed the bowl, and shoved it across the floor so hard it struck the base of a cabinet.
Then I pulled Sophie against my chest.
She clutched my dark suit with both trembling hands.
"Daddy..."
"I'm here."
Her body felt too light.
That terrified me.
I had been gone for four days closing an acquisition in San Francisco. Vanessa Carter had texted me twice a day assuring me Sophie was eating, sleeping, attending school, and doing perfectly fine.
I had come home early because Sophie had sounded strangely quiet during our call that morning.
I had brought gifts because I felt guilty.
Now they were scattered across the floor while my child cried against my chest.
"I'm so hungry," she whispered.
I pulled back enough to look at her.
Her lips were dry.
Her hands trembled.
"When was the last time you ate?"
She lowered her eyes.
I felt my heartbeat pounding behind my ears.
"Sophie."
"Yesterday."
My stomach dropped.
"What?"
She pointed.
I followed her trembling finger.
Vanessa stood in the kitchen doorway.
She wore an elegant burgundy blouse, dark trousers, and heels.
The moment she saw me holding Sophie beside the dog bowl, she stopped moving.
Not shocked.
Caught.
"Richard."
I stood immediately, keeping one arm around Sophie.
Vanessa took one step backward.
"Don't."
She stopped.
"What the hell did you do?"
"This isn't what it looks like."
Sophie buried her face against my side.
"Yesterday," I repeated. "My daughter says she hasn't eaten since yesterday."
Vanessa swallowed.
"She refused dinner."
I looked down at Sophie.
She shook her head frantically.
"No, Daddy."
Vanessa said, "She's been difficult."
Sophie started crying harder.
"She wouldn't let me eat."
Something hot and violent moved through my chest.
I grabbed the dog bowl from the floor.
Vanessa saw my face and began retreating toward the hallway.
"You dared to starve my daughter?!"
I hurled the bowl.
It struck Vanessa squarely across the face.
She jerked backward, lost her balance, and hit the marble floor hard.
Kibble scattered around her.
I moved in front of Sophie immediately.
Vanessa touched her cheek.
Her eyes filled with fury.
"You've lost your mind."
"I haven't even started."
"Richard, listen to me."
"No."
I turned toward Sophie.
"Sweetheart, I need you to tell me everything."
She looked at Vanessa.
Vanessa's expression changed.
A warning.
I saw it.
So did Sophie.
I stepped directly into Vanessa's line of sight.
"Look at me, not her."
Vanessa stood slowly.
"You need to be careful about putting words in a child's mouth."
I turned.
"Get out."
"What?"
"Leave my house."
She laughed nervously.
"You can't possibly believe—"
"Your purse. Your phone. Whatever you came with. Take them and get out."
Vanessa's gaze flicked past me.
Toward the hallway.
It lasted barely a second.
But Sophie noticed.
Her fingers dug into my sleeve.
"Daddy."
"What?"
She pointed past Vanessa.
At the locked walnut door at the far end of the hallway.
I knew that door.
It led to an old service office and wine storage corridor that hadn't been used since we renovated the villa.
At least that was what I had been told.
Sophie's entire body began trembling.
Vanessa went white.
"Daddy..." Sophie whispered.
I crouched beside her.
"What is it?"
She looked at the locked door.
Then at Vanessa.
Her voice became so quiet I almost missed it.
"She didn't do it alone."
The anger disappeared from Vanessa's face.
Pure fear replaced it.
I stood.
"Who's behind that door?"
Vanessa said nothing.
I started walking toward it.
She rushed forward.
"Richard, don't."
I stopped.
That was the wrong thing for her to say.
I turned slowly.
"What did you just say?"
Her breathing changed.
"There's nothing in there."
"Then you won't mind me opening it."
"I don't have the key."
Sophie whispered from behind me.
"She does."
Vanessa closed her eyes.
I held out my hand.
"Key."
"No."
I stared at her.
"You have five seconds."
"Richard—"
"Four."
"This is insane."
"Three."
She backed toward the kitchen.
"Two."
Then Sophie spoke.
"It's in her necklace."
I looked.
A thin gold chain disappeared beneath Vanessa's blouse.
Vanessa grabbed it instinctively.
I moved.
She tried to turn.
I caught her wrist.
"Give it to me."
"Let go."
"Give me the key."
She fought me for two seconds before a small brass key slipped from beneath her collar.
I tore it free.
Vanessa's face collapsed.
"Richard."
I walked toward the locked door.
Behind me, Sophie whispered something that stopped me with my hand on the lock.
"Daddy?"
I turned.
Tears were sliding down her cheeks.
"They told me you'd send me away if you found out."
My heartbeat stopped.
"Found out what?"
Sophie looked toward the door.
May you like
"What's in there."
