Chapter 10 - The Second Son of Jonathan Vale

We searched Caroline's files for another hour.
Sophie fell asleep against my chest.
I carried her to the sofa in my study rather than her bedroom.
No hidden camera I didn't know about.
No one entered without passing me.
Graham sat across the desk.
"Jonathan Vale disappeared twenty-nine years ago."
"What did he do?"
"Private equity. Medical investments. Family offices."
"Adrian followed him into medicine."
"Psychiatry."
"Convenient specialty for declaring people incompetent."
Graham nodded.
I searched archived family filings.
Three known children.
Adrian Vale.
Caroline Hale, unacknowledged.
Marcus Sterling, unacknowledged.
But Eleanor said Adrian was not Jonathan's only surviving son.
Marcus counted.
Unless she meant another son beyond Marcus.
I searched the Halcyon trust.
Several pages were missing.
Deliberately.
"Someone removed the beneficiary schedule."
Graham leaned closer.
"From Caroline's copy?"
"Yes."
"Who had access?"
"Adrian."
"Eleanor."
"Caroline."
"And Owen."
I looked at him.
"You're forgetting yourself."
He went quiet.
I had not.
"You knew Halcyon existed?"
"No."
"You're lying badly tonight."
"I'm not."
I stared at him.
Then opened the payment records again.
Price Risk Solutions.
Graham had been transferring millions.
I traced the ownership.
The company belonged to a trust.
The trust registered through a Delaware attorney.
Beneficial owner hidden.
But one archived insurance certificate listed a previous director.
Graham Holt.
I looked up.
His face went still.
"You owned Owen's company."
"No."
"Your name."
"I helped establish it."
"Same thing."
"It was a security vehicle."
"For Caroline?"
"Originally for Eleanor."
I stopped.
"My mother hired you."
He rubbed his face.
"Twenty years ago."
Everything in my life suddenly seemed to have started before I was old enough to notice.
"What were you protecting her from?"
"Jonathan Vale."
There it was.
"You knew him."
"Yes."
"Is he alive?"
"I don't know."
"Did you know Marcus was his son?"
A pause.
"Yes."
I stood.
Sophie stirred.
I lowered my voice.
"You have lied to me for twelve years."
Graham looked ashamed.
"Your mother made me promise."
"Stop using dead people as permission."
He flinched.
Good.
"Why was Jonathan dangerous?"
"He believed family ownership should follow blood."
"Meaning?"
"When he learned Marcus was his son, he wanted control through him."
"Of Sterling?"
"Eventually."
"But Marcus didn't know."
"No."
"Caroline?"
"Not until later."
"And Adrian?"
"Always."
I stared at him.
"So Adrian grew up knowing Caroline and Marcus were his half-siblings."
"Apparently."
"And said nothing."
"Yes."
"What about Sophie?"
"Once Caroline had a daughter, Sophie became Halcyon's primary beneficiary."
"Why primary?"
"Jonathan's trust favored female-line descendants."
"Then why does Adrian inherit if she's incapacitated?"
"Because he amended it after Jonathan disappeared."
I laughed bitterly.
"Everyone in this family edits trusts."
My phone buzzed.
Marcus.
I answered.
"I'm out."
"How?"
"The archive door opened by itself."
"Where are you?"
"My office."
"Stay there."
"No."
"Marcus."
"I'm done being locked in rooms."
Fair.
I looked at Graham.
"Tell him."
Graham shook his head.
"Tell me what?" Marcus asked.
I answered.
"Jonathan Vale was your biological father."
Silence.
Then Marcus laughed.
"What?"
"Caroline found genetic proof."
"No."
"Eleanor knew."
"Our mother?"
"Yes."
Another silence.
"Richard, this isn't funny."
"I know."
"Then why are you saying it?"
"Because Adrian is your half-brother."
Nothing.
I continued.
"And Caroline was your half-sister."
Marcus's breathing changed.
I heard him sit down.
"Caroline?"
"Yes."
"My God."
"Sophie is Jonathan Vale's granddaughter."
"Through Caroline."
"Yes."
"Then Halcyon..."
He stopped.
"You know Halcyon."
Silence.
I gripped the phone.
"Marcus."
He whispered, "Dad spent years looking for it."
"Our father?"
"Charles knew Jonathan created it."
"How?"
"Because Jonathan used Sterling assets to seed part of it."
My stomach dropped.
"So Halcyon may contain stolen Sterling money."
"Some of it."
Now the inheritance had another danger.
If Sophie inherited Halcyon, dormant evidence could expose decades of financial theft.
"Who is Jonathan's second surviving son?"
Marcus went quiet.
"What?"
"Eleanor said Adrian isn't his only surviving son."
"Me."
"She phrased it like there was someone else."
"Maybe she meant me."
I didn't believe that.
Then Graham's laptop pinged.
A recovered Halcyon beneficiary schedule.
One missing page had synced from an old backup.
I opened it.
Jonathan Vale — issue:
Adrian Vale.
Marcus Vale, registered as Marcus Sterling.
Caroline Vale, registered as Caroline Hale.
And a fourth child.
Male.
Name sealed by court order.
Date of birth.
I stared at it.
Same date Graham was born.
I looked up.
He saw my face.
"No."
I turned the screen toward him.
His hands began trembling.
"Graham."
He stepped backward.
"I didn't know."
"Your birthday."
"I know."
"Your mother?"
"Patricia Holt."
"Did she know Jonathan?"
He closed his eyes.
My stomach dropped.
"Yes."
"How?"
"She worked for him."
Marcus's voice came through the phone.
"Richard?"
I couldn't answer.
Graham whispered, "I swear I didn't know I was his son."
But the Halcyon schedule listed him.
Graham Vale — legally Graham Holt.
My CFO.
My oldest friend in business.
The man who moved millions from Sophie's trust.
The man Caroline gave the original trust to.
A direct adult descendant of Jonathan Vale.
If Sophie became incompetent and Adrian were disqualified...
Graham could inherit control.
I stared at him.
"You benefit too."
His face collapsed.
"No."
"Four million dollars. Hidden security company. Caroline's original trust in your briefcase."
"Richard."
"You knew more than anyone."
"Not this."
"How can I know that?"
He had no answer.
Then Sophie's small voice came from the sofa.
"Daddy?"
I turned.
She was awake.
Holding something.
A phone.
Not mine.
Not Graham's.
"Where did you get that?"
"It was under the pillow."
My blood went cold.
Someone had placed a phone in my study.
She handed it to me.
The screen was already open to a voice recording.
I pressed play.
Graham's voice.
Clear.
Recorded weeks earlier.
"If Richard comes home before Monday, we move to the medical option."
I looked at him.
He went white.
"That's not—"
The recording continued.
Then Adrian's voice.
"And if Sophie refuses the examination?"
Graham's recorded answer:
"Vanessa knows how to make her cooperate."
Sophie looked at him.
My hand tightened around the phone.
Graham whispered:
May you like
"Richard, that recording is fake."
📖 Hear how I test whether Graham’s recording was fabricated—and why the result forces me to question the one man who helped me reach Caroline’s evidence in CHAPTER 11. 👇
