Chapter 11 - The Voice That Sounded Exactly Like Graham

I didn't hit Graham.

I wanted to.

Instead I moved Sophie behind my desk and put myself between them.

"Don't come closer."

"Richard, listen to me."

"I've listened all night."

"That isn't me."

"It sounds exactly like you."

"That's the point."

I stared.

"Deepfake?"

"Probably."

"Convenient."

"Check the metadata."

I did.

The audio file had been created three weeks earlier.

Location data embedded.

Sterling Tower.

Executive conference room.

Graham's phone identifier.

His face changed.

"I was there."

"With Adrian?"

"No."

"Who?"

"Marcus."

I called Marcus again.

"What happened three weeks ago in Conference Room Four?"

A pause.

"Why?"

"Answer."

"Budget review."

"With Graham?"

"Yes."

"Adrian?"

"No."

Graham said, "Ask what we discussed."

I put the call on speaker.

"What?"

Marcus answered.

"Security expenditures. Graham wanted another four million for Price Risk."

I looked at Graham.

He nodded.

"What words did he use?"

Marcus thought.

"He said if you came home before the audit was finished, we'd move to the medical option."

My stomach dropped.

Graham closed his eyes.

I stared at him.

"You said it."

"Yes."

"What medical option?"

"For your mother."

Silence.

"What?"

Graham looked at me.

"Eleanor."

My heartbeat changed.

"She needed relocation."

"Why call that medical?"

"Because she was living under a medical identity."

I felt sick.

"You helped fake my mother's death."

"Yes."

The word nearly knocked me backward.

Marcus swore.

I couldn't speak.

Graham continued.

"She had cancer."

"But she didn't die."

"No."

"Whose funeral did I attend?"

"An empty coffin."

My entire childhood trust in reality seemed to collapse one piece at a time.

"Why?"

"Jonathan Vale found her."

"She was hiding from him?"

"Yes."

"Why didn't she tell me?"

"Because Jonathan believed you knew where Halcyon was."

"I didn't even know Halcyon existed."

"That was the protection."

Again.

Ignorance as protection.

I was sick of it.

"So the recording used real words."

"Spliced."

"What did 'Vanessa knows how to make her cooperate' come from?"

Graham's face tightened.

"I don't know."

Marcus interrupted.

"I do."

We looked at the phone.

"That was from the child wellness discussion."

"What child?"

"Sophie."

My jaw tightened.

Marcus continued quickly.

"Before you explode, it wasn't about hurting her."

"Explain."

"Adrian claimed Sophie needed a routine trust-required evaluation."

"Did you authorize it?"

"Yes."

My anger surged.

"You don't have authority."

"I believed I did as vice chairman."

"Over my child?"

"No."

His voice dropped.

"I was wrong."

At least he admitted it.

Graham said, "Vanessa was supposed to bring Sophie to the appointment."

I remembered Sophie's story.

She had.

Adrian asked about Caroline's music box.

The real purpose wasn't medical.

It was searching for evidence.

The audio had been reconstructed from separate real conversations to make Graham appear complicit.

Someone wanted me to distrust him.

Maybe because Graham knew too much.

Or because he was another Halcyon claimant.

I ran the file through an audio forensic tool my security team used for fraud detection.

The waveform showed hard cuts.

Multiple background noise profiles.

Spliced.

Graham exhaled.

"I'm not innocent."

"No."

"I hid things."

"Yes."

"But I did not order anyone to starve Sophie."

I believed that part now.

I still didn't trust him.

"Who could access your recordings?"

"Executive meeting archive."

"Adrian?"

"Board adviser access."

"Marcus?"

"Yes."

Marcus swore through the phone.

I ignored him.

"Eleanor?"

Graham looked at me.

"Possibly."

My mother.

Alive.

Manipulating pieces from somewhere.

"What does she want?"

"To stop Adrian."

"Then why not come to me?"

"Because she doesn't trust you."

That hurt.

"Why?"

Graham hesitated.

"Because of your father."

"Charles?"

"She believed he changed something about you."

I frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"I don't know."

Another secret.

Enough.

I picked up Sophie's key.

"Hearth gave us Caroline's recording."

Graham nodded.

"What else does Hearth contain?"

"Server archives."

"Where?"

"Below the clinic."

Sophie whispered, "Mommy said star."

I turned.

"What?"

"The silver star."

She pointed at the microSD card.

"Mommy told me star opens the downstairs room."

I stared at her.

Another fragment of memory.

Caroline had hidden keys inside a child's objects because adults were searching everything else.

We returned to the Hearth clinic before dawn.

This time Marcus met us there.

He looked at Sophie first.

Then at me.

"Is she okay?"

"No."

His face tightened.

Good.

He needed to hear it.

Sophie hid slightly behind me.

She knew Marcus.

Trusted him before tonight.

Now she didn't know what to believe either.

We went below the clinic.

The silver star fit into a recessed slot behind an old electrical panel.

A steel partition opened.

Server racks.

Dusty.

Mostly powered down.

One machine blinked.

PROJECT HEARTH.

Marcus whispered, "Caroline built all this?"

Graham nodded.

I found folders labeled by name.

ADRIAN.

ELEANOR.

MARCUS.

GRAHAM.

RICHARD.

SOPHIE.

My own file required a password.

A hint appeared:

WHAT DID I CALL YOU WHEN NOBODY ELSE COULD HEAR?

My throat tightened.

Caroline's private nickname for me.

North.

Because she said I always tried to point everyone home.

I typed NORTH.

The file opened.

Medical records.

Blood panels.

Neuropsych evaluations.

None ordered by me.

Then one genetic test.

RICHARD STERLING — PATERNITY COMPARISON.

My heart stopped.

"Against whom?"

Marcus leaned closer.

The comparison subject was hidden.

I opened the result.

Probability of biological paternity:

0.00%.

I stared.

Paternity of whom?

Another file sat below it.

SOPHIE STERLING — PATERNAL VERIFICATION.

My hands went numb.

I opened it.

Probability Richard Sterling is biological father:

0.00%.

Nobody spoke.

I looked at Sophie.

My daughter.

My entire world.

The screen blurred.

Marcus whispered, "Richard..."

I couldn't hear him.

I opened the attached note.

Caroline's voice recording.

"Richard, if you found this, I need you to know before anyone weaponizes it."

I stopped breathing.

"You are Sophie's father in every way that matters."

My knees almost failed.

"But biologically..."

She began crying on the recording.

May you like

"...you are not."
