Chapter 12 - Caroline’s Strongest Secret

I sat down on the concrete floor.

I didn't care about the dust.

I didn't care that Marcus and Graham were watching.

I looked only at Sophie.

She was six.

She didn't understand percentages on a screen.

She understood my face.

"Daddy?"

I opened my arms.

She ran into them.

I held her.

Nothing had changed.

Nothing.

The thought repeated until my breathing steadied.

Caroline's recording continued.

"I never cheated on you."

I closed my eyes.

"I need you to believe that first."

Marcus turned away, giving me what little privacy the room allowed.

"Our fertility clinic lied."

My eyes opened.

Fertility clinic.

Caroline and I had struggled for two years before Sophie.

We had used embryo assistance.

One cycle.

Successful.

The clinic had told us both genetic materials were ours.

Caroline continued.

"The embryo was mine, but the paternal sample was substituted."

My stomach turned.

"Adrian knew."

Of course.

"He had financial ties to the clinic through Vale Medical."

Graham whispered, "No."

"I discovered the substitution when Sophie's rare blood marker didn't match yours."

Sophie rested her head against my chest.

"I repeated the test privately."

Caroline's voice broke.

"I was terrified to tell you because I didn't know whether the substitution was accidental."

A pause.

"Then Adrian admitted it wasn't."

My entire body went cold.

Marcus whispered, "He admitted it?"

The recording changed.

Another clip.

Adrian.

"You wanted a child."

Caroline:

"Whose sperm did you use?"

Adrian:

"That isn't relevant."

"Who?"

Silence.

Then Adrian:

"Someone genetically appropriate."

Caroline shouted:

"You violated us."

His voice remained calm.

"Your daughter is healthy."

"You chose her father."

"I ensured the Vale line continued."

My stomach twisted.

Caroline:

"Sophie's father is a Vale?"

Adrian:

"Yes."

The recording ended.

Marcus stared at me.

"Jonathan's line."

I understood.

If Sophie's paternal donor was also descended from Jonathan Vale, then her claim to Halcyon might be stronger than Caroline's bloodline alone.

Adrian hadn't simply discovered an heir.

He had engineered one.

"Who is Sophie's biological father?" I asked the recording.

Another file answered.

Caroline's voice.

"I could not identify the donor."

My chest tightened.

"Adrian erased the clinic records before I could obtain them."

A pause.

"But I know he is one of Jonathan Vale's male descendants."

I looked at Marcus.

Then Graham.

Both realized it simultaneously.

Possible descendants.

Adrian.

Marcus.

Graham.

Possibly another unknown Vale son.

My stomach turned.

One of these men could be Sophie's biological father without knowing it.

Caroline continued.

"That is why I changed the trust."

I stood.

"The trust."

"I removed every successor except Richard because biology cannot decide who gets my daughter."

My throat closed.

She had protected me.

Not excluded me.

"The altered version puts Vale descendants back in line."

Adrian changed it.

Now his motive was complete.

Declare me unfit.

Declare Sophie medically impaired.

Take her trust.

Take Halcyon.

Take Sterling voting power.

All through documents.

Psychiatric evaluations.

Starvation.

Staged neglect.

Graham whispered, "We need the donor record."

"Why?"

"Because if Adrian himself was the donor..."

I felt sick.

"Don't."

"I'm sorry."

He lowered his voice.

"If he is Sophie's biological father, he may claim direct parental rights."

Marcus swore.

"Not after what he's done."

"But before it's proven?"

Graham was right.

Adrian could create chaos.

My phone buzzed.

A text from Vanessa.

I had forgotten she was missing.

RICHARD PLEASE ANSWER.

I called immediately.

She picked up sobbing.

"Where are you?"

"I didn't leave willingly."

"Who has you?"

"I don't know."

"Where?"

"Car."

"Can you see anything?"

"No."

Her breathing was fast.

"Richard, I found the donor file."

My heart stopped.

"What?"

"Before they cleared the surveillance room."

"Where?"

"I copied Adrian's folder."

"Why?"

"Insurance."

Of course.

"What does it say?"

"I only saw the code."

"What code?"

"JVV-4."

Graham went still.

Marcus stared at him.

"JVV."

Jonathan Vale Variant?

Vanessa continued.

"There was a name beside it."

"Say it."

A sound interrupted her.

Door opening.

She whispered, "No."

"Vanessa."

A man spoke near her.

"Give me the phone."

I recognized Adrian's voice from Caroline's recording.

Vanessa shouted.

Then the line filled with movement.

"Richard!"

I heard a slap.

"Vanessa!"

Adrian came onto the phone.

"Good morning."

My entire body tightened.

"Where is she?"

"Safe enough."

"Where is my mother?"

A quiet laugh.

"Much closer than you think."

"Who is Sophie's biological father?"

He paused.

"You finally found Caroline's test."

"Answer me."

"Why spoil the family reunion?"

I looked at Marcus.

Graham.

Both pale.

Adrian continued.

"Bring Sophie to Sterling Tower by nine."

"No."

"Then Vanessa's copy disappears."

"I don't need her copy."

"You do if you want the donor's full identity."

"Tell me now."

"No."

"Adrian."

His voice softened.

"Richard, ask Graham what the V in JVV stands for."

I looked at Graham.

His face changed.

"What does it stand for?"

He shook his head.

"I don't know."

Adrian laughed.

"Still lying, little brother."

The call ended.

Graham stood completely motionless.

Marcus whispered:

"Little brother?"

I looked at him.

Graham's voice barely worked.

"Jonathan's full name was Jonathan Victor Vale."

JVV.

Then Sophie pointed toward the server.

"Daddy."

A new folder had appeared.

DONOR JVV-4.

Someone had remotely unlocked it.

I opened the folder.

One photograph loaded.

A young man.

Twenty-five years earlier.

Standing beside Eleanor Sterling.

Graham whispered, "That's Jonathan."

But the donor collection date was only seven years ago.

Jonathan would have been in his seventies.

The photograph wasn't the donor.

It was lineage reference.

Below it appeared:

JVV-4 BIOLOGICAL DESCENDANT MATCH CONFIRMED.

Then:

CURRENT IDENTITY SEALED.

ACCESS REQUIRES MATERNAL OVERRIDE.

Eleanor Sterling.
