Chapter 14 - Sophie Was the Only Child Caroline Found

We opened Thomas's drive at the lake house.
Marcus locked the doors.
Eleanor closed every curtain.
Sophie stayed beside me.
I wanted her asleep.
I wanted her a thousand miles away from every secret in that room.
But nowhere felt safe.
The donor file contained six fertility-clinic case numbers.
Different mothers.
Different states.
Same paternal code.
JVV-4.
Daniel Reed's genetic line.
Five children besides Sophie.
Ages between four and seven.
Marcus stared at the screen.
"Why create six?"
Eleanor answered.
"Redundancy."
I hated the word.
"They're children."
"To Adrian, they're claimants."
Graham opened the Halcyon trust.
The inheritance language was precise.
First verified biological granddaughter of Jonathan Vale through dual-qualified lineage.
Marcus frowned.
"Dual-qualified?"
Eleanor closed her eyes.
"Caroline's line and Daniel's line."
My stomach turned.
"Sophie has Vale ancestry through both parents."
"Yes."
"So the other children..."
"Have only Daniel's line."
Graham nodded.
"They can't inherit Halcyon by themselves."
"Then why create them?"
Eleanor stared at the records.
"Medical testing."
I looked at her.
"What?"
"Jonathan believed concentrated lineage produced identifiable markers."
"You're talking about selective breeding."
No one answered.
That was answer enough.
I felt sick.
Adrian had used human beings as biological experiments.
"Why Sophie?"
"Because Caroline was Jonathan's daughter."
"And Daniel his grandson."
"Yes."
The bloodline converged.
Adrian had engineered the exact heir required by a trust clause written by his father.
Caroline discovered it.
Then died.
"Did Caroline know about the other children?"
Graham opened another file.
A spreadsheet.
She did.
Five case numbers.
Beside each:
LOCATED.
HEALTHY.
NO HALCYON QUALIFICATION.
Then Sophie:
QUALIFIED.
PROTECT.
My throat closed.
Caroline had been searching for the children.
Trying to understand Adrian's program.
The final note read:
If anything happens to me, Richard must find Daniel before Adrian does.
Too late.
Adrian had Daniel.
Maybe Thomas too.
My phone rang.
Unknown.
I answered.
Adrian.
"Enjoying the family history?"
I looked at Sophie.
"What do you want?"
"You know."
"Halcyon."
"Finally."
"You already control the foundation if Sophie misses validation."
"Control isn't ownership."
"You want ownership."
"I want what my father built."
"By using my wife and daughter as breeding stock?"
His voice hardened.
"Careful."
"No."
I stepped away from Sophie.
"You drugged Caroline."
Silence.
"You recorded her without consent."
Nothing.
"You falsified my daughter's medical evaluation."
"You can't prove that."
"Not yet."
A small laugh.
"Then perhaps don't make accusations you can't support."
"Where is Thomas?"
"Alive."
"Daniel?"
"Alive."
"Vanessa?"
A pause.
"Useful."
My stomach tightened.
"What does that mean?"
"She has decided cooperation is safer."
I didn't believe that meant willingly.
"Release them."
"Bring Sophie."
"No."
"Then we wait for her birthday."
"If she misses validation, Halcyon becomes your foundation."
"Correct."
"So why do you need her?"
He paused.
Because there was more.
"What aren't you telling me?"
"Richard."
"What?"
"Your mother always underestimated you."
Eleanor heard.
Her face hardened.
"But you're still thinking like a businessman."
"Explain."
"Halcyon isn't worth $2.4 billion."
I stared at the trust valuation.
"Then how much?"
"That figure is liquid assets."
My pulse changed.
"What else?"
"Patent ownership."
Eleanor whispered, "Don't."
Adrian heard her.
"Eleanor is there."
I looked at my mother.
She went pale.
Adrian laughed.
"Perfect."
"What patents?"
Graham searched the drive.
Adrian answered.
"The diagnostic platform your company plans to acquire Monday."
I stopped.
The acquisition I had just closed in San Francisco.
NeuroVista Technologies.
A medical AI company valued at $6.8 billion.
Sterling Family Holdings was acquiring sixty percent.
"Halcyon owns NeuroVista patents?"
"Twenty-seven foundational patents."
My mouth went dry.
Without them, my acquisition could collapse.
Or become subject to Halcyon licensing.
Adrian had let me spend billions acquiring a company Sophie indirectly controlled.
"You're trying to bankrupt Sterling."
"No."
"Then what?"
"Merge it."
"Under you."
"Under the family."
I laughed.
"You mean under the Vales."
"Names are sentimental."
Then his voice changed.
"Bring Sophie to Sterling Tower by eight-thirty."
"It's already seven-fifty."
"You have forty minutes."
"No."
"Then I submit a medical incapacity report signed by two physicians."
"Based on starvation you orchestrated."
"Can you prove I orchestrated it before the filing?"
I looked at Vanessa's confession evidence.
Not enough yet.
"Once filed," Adrian continued, "Sophie becomes temporarily ineligible to validate Halcyon."
"And you win by delay."
"Exactly."
"Unless I validate first."
Silence.
I had found the pressure point.
"We have Daniel's donor record."
Adrian stopped breathing.
Eleanor looked at Graham.
Graham shook his head, warning me.
Too late.
Adrian's voice became colder.
"No, you don't."
"Want to bet?"
"Thomas had the only copy."
"Then Thomas was smarter than you thought."
A pause.
"Where is Graham?"
I looked at him.
"Why?"
"Because if he has Thomas's drive, he has something he doesn't understand."
Graham frowned.
"What?"
Adrian laughed softly.
"The donor record wasn't stolen from my clinic."
I stared at the drive.
"Then where did Thomas get it?"
"Ask Eleanor."
My mother went completely still.
I turned.
"What is he talking about?"
She whispered, "Richard..."
Adrian continued.
"Thomas copied it from Eleanor's archive."
I looked at her.
"You had Daniel's donor record."
"Yes."
"For how long?"
"Seven years."
My stomach dropped.
Before Sophie was conceived.
"You knew Adrian intended to use Daniel."
"No."
"But you had his sample information."
"Because I was trying to stop Jonathan's program."
"Why not destroy it?"
She didn't answer.
I knew before she said anything.
"You needed an heir too."
Her face collapsed.
"No."
"Then explain."
"I needed leverage."
"Using my future child?"
"I didn't know Caroline would become the maternal line."
Adrian laughed through the phone.
"You see, Richard? Your mother and I differ only in execution."
Eleanor shouted, "You stole the sample!"
"But you preserved it."
Silence.
Sophie walked closer.
"Grandma?"
Eleanor looked at her.
Shame finally appeared.
Adrian said, "Thirty-eight minutes."
Then the call ended.
I stared at my mother.
"Did you know Sophie could inherit Halcyon before she was born?"
"No."
"Did you know Daniel's sample existed?"
"Yes."
"Did you hide it?"
"Yes."
"Did Caroline know?"
"No."
I looked away.
Another betrayal.
Graham returned to the drive.
"Richard."
"What?"
"There's a video file."
"From Thomas?"
"Timestamped twenty minutes ago."
I opened it.
Thomas Reed appeared.
Bruised.
Inside what looked like a medical storage room.
He spoke quickly.
"Richard, if you receive this, Adrian has Daniel and Vanessa."
My heartbeat accelerated.
"I gave Graham the donor record, but do not use it yet."
I looked at Graham.
Thomas continued.
"The specimen was relabeled."
Of course.
"The biological donor is not Daniel Reed."
The room went silent.
Sophie stood beside me.
Thomas's voice dropped.
"Daniel discovered the substitution six years ago and disappeared because Adrian tried to kill him."
Graham whispered, "Then who is JVV-4?"
Thomas looked directly at the camera.
"The real donor is someone Richard already knows."
My skin went cold.
"He has been inside the Sterling family for decades."
The video glitched.
Then one final sentence appeared before it cut.
"Eleanor knows his real name."
Every eye turned toward my mother.
She backed away from the table.
"No."
I stood.
"Who is Sophie's biological father?"
Eleanor's face went white.
Before she answered, the lake-house window exploded inward.
Glass filled the room.
Sophie screamed.
Marcus threw himself over her.
A black object landed on the floor.
Not a weapon.
A phone.
Its screen was playing a live video.
Thomas.
Daniel.
Vanessa.
All three tied to chairs inside Sterling Tower.
A countdown clock read:
00:29:59.
And beneath it:
