Chapter 17 - THE CHARITY GALA

The charity-gala footage lasted six hours.

For most of it, nothing happened.

Donors smiled.

Waiters carried champagne.

Evelyn posed for photographs beneath the Bennett Foundation logo.

Then, at 11:18 p.m., Robert entered the service corridor with a man from Crown Meridian.

Neil followed.

Five minutes later Evelyn joined them.

There was no audio.

But Robert opened a leather folder.

Neil signed something.

Evelyn looked around before taking a page and slipping it into her handbag.

“What page?” Sarah asked.

Owen enlarged the image.

Too blurry to read.

Then Chloe leaned closer.

“Mom still has that handbag.”

Evelyn collected designer bags but rotated them obsessively.

The champagne-colored clutch used at the charity gala had appeared in photographs for months afterward.

It might mean nothing.

Or she might have carried something away from the meeting.

Police could not search her belongings because a family suspicion was not probable cause.

We needed more.

Neil supplied it.

He recognized the meeting.

“That was when the side ledger started.”

Sarah frowned.

“What side ledger?”

Robert ordered Neil to maintain a private schedule tracking money leaving the Crown Meridian facility.

The official books showed intercompany transfers.

The side ledger showed ultimate destinations.

Larkspur.

Robert’s failed Nevada venture.

Evelyn’s trust.

Private loan payments.

“Where is it?”

“I gave it to Robert.”

“Only copy?”

“Electronic.”

“Where?”

“An encrypted drive in his home office.”

Torres immediately asked whether Neil could authenticate it.

“Yes.”

“Did Evelyn know?”

“Yes.”

That gave prosecutors a stronger basis to seek records connected to the financial investigation.

But before any warrant was signed, Evelyn did something unexpected.

She visited Chloe.

Not Sarah.

Chloe recorded the conversation from her apartment security system.

Evelyn entered crying.

“Come home.”

“No.”

“Your father is falling apart.”

“He pushed Sarah.”

“He was angry.”

“Stop saying that like anger is a defense.”

Evelyn’s expression changed.

“You think Sarah will protect you when this is over?”

Chloe stared at her.

“What does that mean?”

“She already found your expenses.”

“My surgery?”

“Everything.”

Evelyn tried to turn the sisters against each other again.

Chloe didn't take the bait.

“Did you know about the loan?”

Evelyn looked toward the door.

Then said quietly, “Your father made mistakes.”

“Did you take money?”

“Everything I did was for this family.”

“Did you take money?”

Evelyn stood.

“You don't know what it costs to hold a family like ours together.”

Chloe answered, “Maybe it shouldn't be held together.”

Evelyn slapped her.

Fast.

Automatic.

Then froze.

The apartment camera caught it.

Chloe did not cry.

She simply said, “Thank you.”

“For what?”

“For finally doing it where someone can see.”

The pattern was no longer Sarah’s word against her mother.

Evelyn had repeated it herself.

📖 Evelyn’s attack on Chloe exposed the same cycle of violence and denial, while Neil’s side ledger offered the clearest map yet of where the hidden millions actually went. 👇
