Chapter 26 - THE LAST HEARING
Robert sat ten feet from Sarah in court.
He did not look at Lily.
Our daughter was home from the NICU by then, safe with Chloe and a nurse.
Sarah was still healing.
She walked slowly.
But she walked into the courtroom herself.
Robert faced the assault charge separately from the financial case.
No single hearing decided everything.
Real cases do not resolve with one dramatic piece of evidence.
But this hearing determined whether the assault prosecution would proceed and whether restrictions protecting Sarah would remain in place.
The state presented the banquet video.
Robert grabbing Sarah.
Pulling her up.
Shoving her.
The audio.
Sarah saying:
Being your daughter does not require me to lie for you.
Robert shouting.
The impact.
Then Evelyn stepping toward Sarah.
Stop the act.
You’re embarrassing this entire family.
The judge watched without expression.
Detective Torres testified about the deleted server attempts.
Owen testified about preservation.
A forensic examiner authenticated the video and audio.
Robert’s attorney argued he reacted impulsively during a heated family dispute and never intended serious injury.
That argument could matter at trial.
It could not erase what everyone saw.
Sarah testified.
Her voice shook only once.
“When my father put his hands on me, I believed he was angry.”
She looked at Robert.
“Later I learned he had already searched my office because I found evidence of fraud.”
Robert finally looked up.
Sarah continued.
“I don't know whether he intended me to fall as far as I did.”
That surprised his lawyer.
She was not exaggerating.
“I know he chose to shove me while I was eight months pregnant beside a granite staircase.”
Truth did not need decoration.
The judge continued the protective order and allowed the prosecution to proceed.
In the financial investigation, grand-jury charges followed later.
Robert faced counts related to fraud, false certifications, conspiracy, evidence tampering, and misuse of corporate funds.
Evelyn faced charges connected to Larkspur, identity misuse, evidence interference, and her assaults.
Neil pleaded guilty to lesser financial offenses and cooperated.
Chloe accepted responsibility for knowingly receiving some questionable funds and entered a restitution agreement while cooperating with investigators.
Daniel restructured his debt through independent counsel and resigned from the board.
No one walked away untouched.
That was the point.
Outside court, Robert tried to speak to Sarah.
“Whatever happens, I'm still your father.”
Sarah stopped.
For years, that sentence would have controlled her.
Not anymore.
“You were my father when you searched my office.”
Robert's face tightened.
“You were my father when you let Mom steal my credentials.”
“Sarah—”
“You were my father when you put your hands on me.”
He looked down.
“Being my father explains why it hurts.”
She took my hand.
“It does not erase what you did.”
We walked away.
Not victorious.
Free.
