Chapter 3 - BEFORE THE FALL

At 11:42 p.m., Owen sent me a copy of the banquet-hall footage.

I did not watch the fall first.

I watched the twenty minutes before it.

Sarah sat beside the staircase while guests carried birthday gifts toward Evelyn’s table.

Robert moved between donors and business partners.

Chloe stayed close to the bar, walking carefully in heels because her surgeon had warned her against sudden movement.

Then Evelyn approached Sarah.

There was no audio from that camera.

Only faces.

Sarah removed a folded sheet from her clutch.

Evelyn read it.

Her smile disappeared.

She leaned toward Sarah and said something sharp.

Sarah shook her head.

Evelyn reached for the paper.

Sarah pulled it back.

Then Robert appeared.

The argument lasted forty-one seconds.

Sarah remained seated.

Robert’s hands came down onto her shoulders.

He pulled her up.

He shoved.

There was no stumble.

No accidental collision.

No ambiguity.

I watched it once.

That was enough.

But the footage also showed something I had missed while running toward Sarah.

The moment she hit the lower landing, Chloe moved toward Sarah’s abandoned handbag.

She bent carefully.

Removed something.

A blue envelope.

Then slipped it behind her burgundy dress.

My pulse started pounding.

Sarah had said the evidence was in her locked office desk.

Apparently she had brought at least part of it to the banquet.

I called Chloe.

She didn't answer.

I called again.

Nothing.

Then Owen called.

“Mr. Bennett, something is happening on the server.”

“What?”

“Someone is trying to delete tonight’s archive.”

“Can they?”

“Not the copy I made.”

“Who’s logged in?”

He hesitated.

“Your father’s administrator account.”

Robert had seen the camera.

Now he was trying to erase it.

“Preserve everything.”

“I am.”

“Send it to your personal attorney if you need to.”

“I already sent a copy to our off-site compliance vault.”

Good.

One truth had been secured.

Robert shoved Sarah.

But the footage created a bigger question.

Why did Chloe take the blue envelope?

I returned to Sarah’s room after midnight.

She was awake.

The contraction monitor had quieted.

The baby’s heartbeat moved steadily across the screen.

I sat beside her.

“I saw the footage.”

Her eyes filled.

“Dad?”

“Clear as day.”

She closed her eyes.

I waited before telling her the rest.

“Chloe took the envelope.”

Sarah opened her eyes again.

“No.”

“I watched her.”

“She wouldn't.”

“She did.”

Sarah looked more hurt by that than by anything involving Robert.

“What's in it?”

“Copies of three invoices and a vendor ownership search.”

“Vendor?”

“Larkspur Consulting.”

She swallowed.

“They billed Bennett Grand Events almost three million dollars.”

“For what?”

“Brand strategy. Venue repositioning. International event consulting.”

“Did they do any of it?”

“I can’t find anyone who has ever worked with them.”

“Who owns it?”

Sarah looked toward the hospital door.

“That’s what I was going to tell Mom tonight.”

Then she said the name.

May you like

“Evelyn Bennett.”

📖 The camera proved Robert deliberately shoved Sarah, but the missing envelope linked Evelyn to millions in company payments—and Chloe had just walked away with the evidence. 👇
