We listened in a hospital conference room.
Sarah’s voice came first.
Calm.
“Mom, I know Larkspur belongs to you.”
Evelyn answered quietly.
“Lower your voice.”
“I gave you three weeks to explain.”
“This is not the place.”
“You chose the place when you invited half the board.”
“You're threatening me at my birthday?”
“No. I’m telling you I’m disclosing the related-party payments Monday.”
A pause.
Then Evelyn:
“You will destroy your father.”
“I’m not destroying anyone.”
“You have no idea what we sacrificed for you girls.”
“Then show me the books.”
Another pause.
“Sarah, stop.”
“I won't sign off on false invoices.”
“You arrogant little girl.”
“I’m the CFO.”
“You are my daughter first.”
Sarah answered with the sentence Robert later called disrespect.
“Being your daughter does not require me to lie for you.”
That was it.
No insult.
No threat.
No attack.
Then Robert’s voice entered.
“What did you just say to your mother?”
“Dad, stay out of this.”
“Apologize.”
“No.”
“Don't you be disrespectful to your mother!”
Fabric rustled.
