Chapter 5 - THE VELASCO TRUST

Mateo’s grandfather, Alejandro Velasco, died two years earlier.
His estate was substantial.
Real estate.
Investments.
Business holdings.
Nicolás inherited control of the family company.
Mateo became beneficiary of a separate trust.
Leonor received significant assets too.
She was wealthy.
This was not about needing grocery money.
The trust contained a provision concerning management if Mateo developed a long-term incapacity.
A family trustee could temporarily participate alongside the corporate trustee in certain decisions.
The nominated family trustee:
Leonor.
But she could not simply take Mateo’s money.
The corporate trustee controlled distributions.
So the theory that she poisoned him to steal millions did not fit.
Something else did.
Medical incapacity would increase Leonor’s formal role in Mateo’s life.
Nicolás showed me an email.
His mother had written it six months earlier.
You work constantly. Mateo needs someone who understands what he requires.
Nicolás replied:
He needs his father.
Leonor:
You are barely here.
Then another:
If his condition becomes chronic, you’ll need me.
Control.
Again.
May you like
Not money.
Leonor wanted to become indispensable.
