Chapter 7 - WHY SHE HATED ME

I had nursing-assistant training but was not a registered nurse.

I was careful about that distinction.

I could monitor.

Document.

Assist with routines.

Follow medical instructions.

I could not independently diagnose Mateo.

Leonor mocked me as “the servant with a thermometer.”

Mateo trusted me anyway.

When he became sick, I wrote down:

Meals.

Timing.

Symptoms.

Visitors.

Medication.

At first those notes were for doctors.

Eventually they became a pattern.

Episodes frequently followed warm milk.

I stopped giving it.

Mateo improved for three weeks.

Then Leonor complained I was depriving him of comfort.

She made it herself.

He became sick that night.

That detail had been sitting in my notebook for months.
