Chapter 6 - WHAT HAPPENED TO MATEO’S MOTHER

Mateo’s mother, Elena, had died when he was eighteen months old.

Car accident.

No mystery.

No conspiracy.

No secret connection to Leonor.

That mattered because Nicolás initially feared everything.

Once someone you trust poisons your child, history becomes suspicious.

Investigators reviewed what needed reviewing.

Nothing connected Leonor to Elena’s death.

The accident remained exactly what it had always been:

an accident.

But Elena’s death explained Leonor’s psychological entry point.

Afterward, Leonor moved into the villa temporarily.

She cared for Mateo.

Nicolás was grieving.

Working badly.

Sleeping worse.

Leonor became the household’s center.

When Nicolás recovered enough to resume parenting independently, she resisted every reduction in her role.

Then I was hired.

I was not replacing a maid.

I was replacing Leonor.

That was why she hated me.
