Chapter 10 - EVELYN LOST CONTROL

Julian cooperated independently.
Not nobly.
Not enough to erase harm.
But meaningfully.
He provided passwords.
Accounts.
Emails.
Locations.
He confirmed Evelyn’s role.
Also admitted his own without blaming her for everything.
That changed case.
Evelyn was furious.
“You’re destroying this family!”
Julian reportedly answered:
“You already taught me how.”
Then he corrected himself.
“No. We did.”
That mattered.
Evelyn had raised him.
Manipulated him.
Controlled him.
But he was thirty-four.
Adult responsibility remained.
Then Vance Development collapsed.
Not overnight.
Projects frozen.
Creditors.
Civil claims.
Investigations.
Employees affected.
That bothered me.
When powerful people commit financial misconduct, innocent employees often pay too.
Dad’s company helped facilitate legitimate transition on one project to protect workers.
Not because Vances deserved rescue.
Because workers didn’t deserve ruin.
Then Evelyn sold mansion.
The foyer where I had been attacked became just real estate.
I never returned.
Good.
Then my eyes recovered.
Vision intact.
Sensitivity persisted for months.
Wedding photos?
I deleted most.
Kept one.
Me alone before ceremony.
White dress.
Bouquet intact.
I looked hopeful.
For a while I hated that woman.
Then realized she wasn’t foolish.
She simply didn’t know.
People aren’t stupid because someone successfully lies to them.
Then Julian’s criminal and civil consequences proceeded.
Assault mattered separately from financial misconduct.
Good.
My body wasn’t footnote to business scandal.
Then Evelyn requested meeting.
I nearly refused.
But something inside me wanted to see her without mansion.
Without diamonds.
Without Julian.
We met with attorneys present.
She wore simple navy dress.
No jewelry.
She looked old.
First words:
“You ruined my son.”
I almost stood.
Then she said:
“No.”
She closed eyes.
“I practiced saying that because it was easier than saying truth.”
“What truth?”
“I ruined him first.”
For first time, Evelyn Vance wasn’t performing superiority.
But remorse doesn’t automatically deserve access.
May you like
So I stayed seated.
And listened.
